What we need

We are looking for a hands-on, detail-oriented Machinist to join our Fixtures & Prototypes team within the System Test organization. Your job will be to bring prototypes, machines, tools, and fixtures from concept to completion. You will collaborate with engineers to influence and optimize designs, fabricate custom, low-volume, and one-of-a-kind parts and components in our machine shop, and build fixtures.

You will operate, program, and set up manual and CNC machines to produce metal and plastic parts based on engineering drawings and specifications. You will also take ownership of maintaining shop equipment and managing machine schedules. This is a dynamic position that blends creativity, design, and problem-solving with hands-on machining, assembly, and maintenance.

What we do

The Fixtures & Prototypes team is part of the System Test organization. The team collaborates with engineers to optimize designs and bring prototypes, machines, tools, and fixtures from concept to completion through machining, fabrication, assembly, and maintenance.

What you'll do

  • Analyze complex engineering drawings, CAD/CAM files, sketches, and blueprints to understand dimensions, tolerances, and job specifications.

  • Select and install the proper cutting tools, fixtures, and raw materials, and write, edit, and prove out CNC machine programs, including G-code and M-code programming.

  • Perform turning, milling, drilling, and shaping operations to produce custom, low-volume, and one-of-a-kind parts to exact tolerances, using precision measuring instruments to verify that first and final pieces meet quality standards.

  • Collaborate with engineers early in the design process to influence and optimize designs for manufacturability, quality, and efficient machining.

  • Work cross-functionally with engineering teams to fabricate parts and components and bring prototypes, machines, tools, and fixtures from concept to completion.

  • Use hands-on machining expertise and shop-floor feedback to influence engineering decisions, identify design improvements, and solve complex prototype and fabrication challenges.

  • Perform daily preventive maintenance, manage machine schedules, and maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.

What you'll need

  • High school diploma or GED and 8 or more years of experience as a machinist working with manual and CNC machines; vocational or technical training or a completed apprenticeship is highly preferred.

  • Experience with CNC software such as CAMWorks or familiarity with other CNC machining software, including Mastercam or Fusion 360.

  • Experience working with ProtoTRAK and Haas machines and controls.

  • Experience with waterjet machines and/or laser cutting equipment.

  • Strong understanding of machining principles, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and the properties of various metals.

  • Advanced shop math and analytical skills, including the ability to calculate feeds, speeds, dimensions, and tolerances.

  • Experience with SolidWorks CAD software and familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel; relevant certifications are a strong plus.

Our environment

  • There will be steep stairs to climb into the structure. You may be required to routinely walk up and down stairs to navigate the automation structure. 

  • You will regularly be near railings that are high off the ground.  

  • Subject to environmental conditions, protection from weather conditions but not necessarily temperature changes. Must be capable of working in temperatures ranging from 105° to 32° Fahrenheit.  

  • At times you may be at a construction site with PPE required (hard hat, safety vest, steel toes, eyeglasses, ear protection, fall protection (e.g., safety harness). 

 

Physical Requirements: 

  • Frequent ability to safely and efficiently lift items weighing up to 50lbs and move items weighing up to 80lbs. 

  • Stand/walk for up to 10-12 hours and is frequently required to walk and reach with hands and arms.  

  • The employee is routinely required to work at heights of up to 45 feet and within restrictive areas of 24 inches. Where you may need to be able to stand, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. 

  • Must be capable of occasional and/or continuous feeling, seeing, hearing, bending, twisting, stooping, pushing, pulling, balancing, gripping, climbing, crawling, sitting, handling objects, and repetitive movement using both hands and feet. Must comply with all safety requirements and protocols, including without limitation Lock out tag out safety protocols and fall protection safety protocols. 

  • Employees may be required to use a personal credit card for business travel expenses, which are reimbursed based on the program guidelines. Eligible employees may receive a corporate credit card based on role and travel requirements, but a personal credit card may be needed during onboarding until the corporate card is issued.

The base range for this position in the posted location is $101,000.00 - $138,600.00 however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The compensation package includes medical, dental, vision, disability, 401K, PTO and/or other benefits.
