Job Description
The Senior Logistics Specialist will act as the Business Process Lead for the Small Molecule Global Logistics team at Vertex Pharmaceuticals. This pivotal role focuses on ensuring the timely and compliant movement of critical products to meet patient needs. The position consists of two primary objectives:
Logistics Execution: Manage the coordination of product shipments across Vertex’s global supply chain network, including cold chain transportation management, and overseeing inventory at storage and distribution sites.
Business Process Leadership: Serve as Business Process SME within Global Logistics and lead programs such as carrier onboarding, storage network optimization, or technology improvements. Identify, drive, and implement continuous improvement initiatives that increase efficiency, reduce cost, and improve service.
Key Responsibilities:
Logistics Coordination:
- Provide comprehensive logistics support by coordinating and prioritizing planned shipments, troubleshooting distribution-related issues, and tracking shipments globally.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholder teams such as Supply Chain and Quality to conduct transactions in Vertex’s material management software system.
- Ensure timely and accurate completion and record retention for all logistics-related documentation and reporting (i.e., GxP, Financial, etc.).
- Own and support GxP deviations, change controls, and other quality events related to global logistics operations.
- Oversee the end-to-end logistics coordination of temperature-controlled GMP and non-GMP pharmaceutical materials worldwide.
- Communicate and collaborate with stakeholders (e.g., scientists, production planners, contract manufacturers, and logistics service providers) to ensure shipments are delivered on time and in full.
- Advise stakeholders on import/export compliance requirements and work to ensure shipments are moved as efficiently and compliantly as possible.
- Partner with Quality and Shipping Validation teams to ensure logistics lanes meet regulatory and business requirements, and update documentation as needed.
Business Process Leadership and Systems Analysis:
- Business Process SME for logistics with deep understanding of information and data flows, process customers and stakeholders, and upstream and downstream requirements.
- Active User of Vertex Transportation Management System, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), and other core systems supporting logistics operations. Utilize Vertex applications to perform day-to-day transactions, diagnose system issues, and maximize efficiency across systems.
- Collaborate with business partners to improve system functionality and leverage capabilities to scale operations in line with growing transaction volumes.
- Monitor and resolve errors within ERP/TMS systems, ensuring smooth operation of logistics functions.
- Manage logistics-related Master Data, ensuring its integrity and alignment with system requirements.
Relationship Management:
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with third-party warehouses, carriers, contract manufacturers, and other entities within Vertex’s global supply chain network.
- Take full responsibility within scope of position and/or materials or projects managed to work with various cross-functional groups within Vertex (e.g., Quality, Tech Ops, Regulatory, Supply Chain, etc.) to proactively and collaboratively complete project tasks, resolve issues, or implement other initiatives.
- Assist and participate in business review meetings to assess logistics performance and ensure alignment with business objectives.
- Collaborate with third-party suppliers, carriers, and cross-functional teams to proactively resolve any obstacles to the timely movement of materials or products.
Qualifications:
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with a focus on professional and timely interactions.
- Strong ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced environment, with flexibility to work outside standard business hours due to the global nature of the role.
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proven ability to work independently and collaborate within a team setting.
- Experience in managing logistics projects of varying complexity, demonstrating a proactive approach to problem-solving.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in Operational Management, Logistics, Supply Chain, or a related field.
- Knowledge of global trade principles and import/export regulations.
- Experience working in a global logistics environment with outsourced cold chain transportation and temperature-controlled warehousing providers.
- In-depth understanding of Good Distribution Practices (GDP) and global regulations governing logistics and distribution.
- Experience with Transportation Management Systems (TMS) and materials management within Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Warehouse Management Systems (WMS).
- Previous experience working in a fast-paced and regulated industry, such as pharmaceuticals or biotechnology.

Pay Range:
$87,400 - $131,100

The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
