At McCain, the Legal team is responsible for providing and managing legal and compliance services and assisting with the management of risks associated with McCain's global business operations. The business groups look to the Legal team for assistance and guidance in a variety of arrangements, strategic initiatives, and contractual and other dealings with third parties. We are now seeking a Sr. Legal Counsel, North America to join as a key member of the Legal team to assist with supporting our North American region. Located in our Oakbrook, IL office, this person will report to our General Counsel, Americas, and provide strategic and tactical day-to-day legal advice to internal McCain clients within a diverse corporate counsel portfolio. The Sr. Legal Counsel, North America will be directly involved in complex business transactions and negotiating critical contracts in North America.
How You'll Add Value:

  • Serve as a business-oriented strategic partner for internal clients and build strong relationships with senior leaders in North America
  • Provide advice and assistance with respect to strategic initiatives and significant projects
  • Provide day-to-day legal advice to address broad legal needs of internal clients, including partnering meaningfully with certain business units in a proactive manner by prioritizing support, anticipating issues, estimating risks, identifying solutions and by addressing evolving needs (e.g. template development, trainings, etc.)
  • Assist with commercial contract matters with the goal of assisting business partners to achieve their objectives while identifying and mitigating risks, including preparing, reviewing and negotiating agreements with customers, suppliers, service providers and other third parties
  • Participate as part of McCain's cross functional teams, including in managing special situations in North America (e.g. incidents involving people safety, food safety and product recalls)
  • Participate in the definition and development of corporate policies, procedures and programs, and provide training and mentoring with respect to such policies etc., including McCain's legal compliance programs (e.g. antitrust, anti-corruption, privacy, record retention, competition)
  • Work collaboratively with McCain lawyers in other regions in many aspects of daily work
  • Manage external counsel relationships, including ensuring appropriate external counsel selection and excellent work quality


About You:

  • A minimum of 7 years' of broad experience, with an emphasis on corporate/commercial, ideally gained from both private practice and in-house roles
  • Experience in the international manufacturing sector or food manufacturing is desirable
  • Team oriented, "roll up your sleeves" and business-focused approach, with the ability to contribute at a strategic level and a pro-active and practical approach to risk management
  • Excellent management and leadership skills, and ability to build strong relationships and collaborate across the organization
  • Ability to adapt to an evolving environment and work under pressure, balancing multiple projects and prioritizing workload in a fast-paced setting
  • Excellent skills in drafting and editing a variety of corporate contracts and materials
  • Superior organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
