🇦🇺 Heads up! This role is based in-person at our office in sunny Brisbane, Australia. 🇦🇺

🌎 About Askable

Askable is the world's most loved user research platform, trusted by Woolworths, Qantas, Canva, BUPA, CommBank, NAB, Telstra, BBC, Mastercard and hundreds more.

We started in 2017 as an idea scribbled on a sticky note, born out of frustration with clunky, outdated research processes. Today, with offices in Brisbane, London, and Chicago, we help teams run better research faster, from participant recruitment to insights, so they can build products people actually want.

We're now scaling into our next growth phase, and this role will play a part in setting up the legal foundations that support it.

💡 About the role

We're hiring an in-house lawyer to take carriage of and build out this function across international jurisdictions. This is a build-from-zero role: no legal team, no existing playbook, no one to ask when something's unclear. You'll own day-to-day legal execution across commercial, privacy, and corporate matters, partnering closely with Sales, Product, Security, and Leadership, and you'll report directly to the COO.

This is a hands-on role for a pragmatic, business-minded lawyer who's comfortable building from scratch, enabling revenue, and managing risk without slowing the company down.

🛠 What you’ll do

Commercial and revenue enablement: own and negotiate enterprise SaaS agreements (MSAs, DPAs, SLAs, SOWs), partner with Sales to unblock deals and improve deal velocity, create and maintain contract templates and fallback positions, and advise on procurement, vendor, and partnership agreements.

Data privacy and security: lead legal aspects of data protection and privacy across our operating markets (GDPR, UK GDPR, CCPA where relevant), support customer security reviews and questionnaires, partner with Security and Engineering on SOC 2 and ISO processes, and draft and maintain DPAs, privacy policies, and internal guidance. With Askable operating across Australia, the UK, the US, and the Philippines, this role will get real exposure to multi-jurisdiction data and cross-border transfer issues from day one.

Corporate and operational legal: support board governance, corporate housekeeping, and cap table matters, manage employment-related legal issues with HR, identify legal risks early and propose pragmatic solutions, and build lightweight legal processes that scale with the business.

Legal operations and external counsel: act as the primary interface with external counsel, decide when to handle matters in-house versus outsource, and control legal spend over time.

––––––––––––––––––––
🦉 Skills and experience you’ll bring

The most important thing: proven experience as in-house counsel at a scaling SaaS or tech company. Time at a commercial law firm is a strong asset, but we're looking first for someone who has already operated inside a business like ours, not just advised one from outside.

You'll also bring a strong background in enterprise SaaS commercial contracting, experience working inside fast-growing companies or scale-ups, comfort operating as a sole legal contributor with real ambiguity (with the ability to grow and lead a team as the function matures), and the judgment to balance risk against business velocity.

Bonus points for experience in regulated or data-heavy industries, and exposure to international expansion. Given Askable's footprint across four countries, this isn't a side interest, it's a meaningful part of the job.

––––––––––––––––––––
🚀 The mindset you’ll need

You will be responsible for building the function while doing the job: setting up templates, playbooks, and processes as you go rather than inheriting them. You'll need energy, genuine curiosity about how the business works, and the judgment to make calls without a precedent to point to.

You'll also bring the emotional maturity to give and receive direct feedback, a genuine enjoyment of stretch goals, and a willingness to learn our product and offering quickly so your legal advice stays grounded in how the business actually works.

––––––––––––––––––––
🙌 Perks and benefits

Competitive salary, a vibrant and social work environment, Askable Days (a bonus paid day off every month, for a total of 7 weeks annual leave), buffet lunch every day, free public transport to and from the office, and more.

––––––––––––––––––––
☝️ Before you go...

Research shows many people, especially women and minority groups, hesitate to apply unless they meet every requirement. At Askable, we're committed to building diverse teams with unique perspectives. If you're excited about this role but your experience doesn't align perfectly, we'd still love to hear from you.
