Cover Genius is seeking a talented Design System Engineer to lead the development of our enterprise-wide UI component library and the Design System website. This is a foundational role reporting to the Director of Engineering, with a close partnership with our Design team.
You'll be the technical owner of our web components-based GUI framework and Design System implementation, working at the intersection of design and engineering to help shape how UI is built across the organization. The role involves more than just building components - you'll drive the adoption, documentation, and evolution of the Design System while collaborating with our established Design team and engaged engineers – Design System champions.
We have a strong foundation with the Design System already used by the Design Team in Figma, design tokens synchronised into an early prototype of UI components library which is based on Lit and Lion, and a community of developers who contribute part-time and who will lead the integration of the component library in their teams. You'll be the first full-time engineer dedicated to this initiative, with plans to grow the Design System engineering team further in 2025 and full support from the management and engineering team that both understand the value of Design System framework being adopted in the right way.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain a set of reusable web components that are used by Product teams across the portfolio of business projects.
- Implement design token synchronization between Figma and the web components library.
- Work closely with design and product teams to establish and streamline the design-to-development workflow.
- Develop internal Design System portal.
- Optimize components for performance and accessibility.
- Collaborate with designers to translate design concepts and prototypes into functional, high-quality web components.
- Ensure consistency of the design language across all web components and applications.
- Contribute to the evolution of our design system, ensuring it meets the needs of various products and platforms.
Experience and skills:
- Experience implementing Design Systems and building UI components libraries in larger organisations ideally using Lit, Lion and TypeScript.
- Solid understanding of web components and modern web technologies, standards and practices.
- Strong knowledge of web accessibility standards and experience with accessibility testing.
- Experience working with design teams on implementing design system technical solutions.
- Good understanding of the development best practices, code reviews, continuous integration, release process, version control, code quality tools, linters, etc.
- Experience using testing frameworks – visual, components, end-to-end testing.
- Excellent communication, teamwork and leadership skills.
- Experience with working the Figma API and design to development automation. I.e export tokens from figma would be a plus
- Attention to detail
