Job Description:

As a DBA here at Skillz, you will play a major role in defining the database strategy across the company. You’ll work hand-in-hand with the Head of Infrastructure to modernize our database architecture. As we scale the business, you will focus on identifying ways to maintain the security, stability, and performance of our databases while managing costs. Additionally, you’ll collaborate directly with engineers to disseminate best practices and provide guidance on schema design and query optimization.

What you'll do:

  • Plan and execute the migration of a legacy RDS MySQL database to Aurora MySQL.
  • Work with engineering to provide guidance on schema design and query optimization.
  • Ensure minimal downtime during database upgrades.
  • Act as the subject matter expert for all aspects of our operational MySQL databases.
  • Monitor and maintain database health across the cluster.
  • Effectively articulate technical challenges and solutions.
  • Set the bar for operational excellence and drive improvements in customer SLAs and system KPIs.

Qualifications:

  • Able to work in-office 5 days a week in San Mateo or Las Vegas (relocation assistance available for brand new Vegas HQ)
  • Experience in the Gaming Industry (ideally). Alternatively - experience with Unity and a passion for building services for games.
  • [Senior] 6+ years of experience in administering databases serving large distributed systems. [Lead] 9+ years of experience in database administration.
  • 6+ years of SQL experience. General familiarity with AWS RDS MySQL and ideally Aurora MySQL.
  • Extensive experience debugging and tuning performance on large databases serving distributed systems. Knowledge of database security best practices.
  • Software development experience in one or more general-purpose programming languages such as Golang or Python.
  • [Senior] Ability to execute projects with minimal oversight. [Lead] Ability to work autonomously and curate and execute project plans with minimal input.
  • [Senior] Experience optimizing query performance and application access patterns to promote system health. [Lead] Experience in setting the team's data modeling strategy (schema, query, partition strategy).
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a technical field of study, or equivalent industry experience

Bonus Points:

  • Familiarity with the general AWS landscape (EC2, MSK, EKS, S3, Redis).
  • Experience in building and optimizing data pipelines (Airflow, Kafka, Flink, CDC) and data warehouses (Snowflake, Redshift).
  • Experience with other database systems like DynamoDB, Postgres, Elasticsearch.
