Job Description

The (Senior) Grid Engineer plays a critical role in the development, construction, and optimisation of renewable energy projects across Germany. This position acts as the primary technical point of contact, addressing commercial, regulatory, and design-related challenges to ensure the successful delivery of renewable projects from early-stage development through to execution. The main aim is to support Germany's renewables portfolio, with flexibility for projects elsewhere if required.

  • Lead the engineering phase of renewable projects, overseeing technical assessments related to grid infrastructure design, planning, cost estimation, support procurement, environmental permitting, stakeholder engagement, risk management, and internal approvals. Evaluate grid infrastructure feasibility, constructability, risk assessment, and CAPEX estimates during early project phases.
  • Experience in high-voltage (HV) substation design, construction, and commissioning.
  • Serve as the technical lead for the grid infrastructure scope during the procurement phase. This includes defining specifications and requirements, evaluating technical proposals, and supporting contract negotiations.
  • Provide detailed engineering expertise to support grid engineers across project phases.
  • Prepare and Quality assure technical specifications in grid infrastructure tenders.
  • Oversee grid elements and works of project contracts, ensuring technical quality and compliance with specifications during execution.
  • Manage technical interfaces between contractors.
  • Support technical due diligence processes.
  • Attend, supervises, and witnesses factory inspections and acceptance tests.
  • Supervise third-party engineers and external design services as required.
  • Plan, lead, and document project design reviews, ensuring technical consistency with economic, scheduling, and regulatory objectives.
  • Conducts technical analysis during design and construction to identify non-conformities and recommend solutions for design or technical issues.

Qualifications

  • Proven record of hands-on experience in both the design and construction of grid connections.
  • Experience in high-voltage (HV) substation design, construction, and commissioning
  • Practical experience working with grid operators.
  • Familiarity with the German electricity market and regulatory environment and good understanding of the German grid code and the grid connection agreement process for renewable energy projects in Germany
  • Experience with underground cable system design and routing.
  • Knowledge of power system studies. proficiency in related software is an advantage.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, managing tasks and delivering engineering outputs with minimal supervision
  • Willingness and ability to conduct regular site visits.
  • High attention to detail and ability to deliver quality results under tight deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively across internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in German and English
