ABOUT THE POSITION

Responsibilities
  • Own the design of game mechanics and systems from concept through paper design, prototyping, implementation, tuning, and delivery.
  • Partner with level designers so each layout expresses its mechanic and drives player decisions.
  • Design competitive multiplayer rules, scoring, and match flow, and balance them for fairness and fun.
  • Design and tune the behavior parameters of AI-driven characters.
  • Design systems as data: define configurable parameters with clear value ranges so engineers can build them and QA can test their limits.
  • Write and maintain detailed design documentation to the client's template and standard.
    Define success metrics for each mechanic and use playtest feedback and telemetry data to tune it.
  • Review existing designs, identify gaps and risks, and propose improvements with clear reasoning.
  • Present designs to the client's design team and refine them together.
  • Work with engineers and artists to keep the implementation true to the design intent.
  • Work with QA to find, reproduce, and fix reported issues.
    Share knowledge and mentor other designers.
Qualifications
  • At least 5 years in a game design role.
  • Shipped at least one full-cycle title, from pre-production to launch, on console, PC, or a major mobile title in a game design role.
  • Proven ability to design within mobile constraints, shown through a shipped mobile title, a shipped mobile mode, or a strong portfolio project.
  • Strong grasp of core game systems, metagame systems, and control systems.
  • Experience designing and balancing competitive multiplayer mechanics.
  • Comfortable working in a data-driven, config-based game design pipeline.
  • Proficient in Unity.
  • Able to write clear, structured design documentation.
  • Able to build quick prototypes.
  • Proactive in taking on tasks and raising problems to the right stakeholders.
  • Able to take feedback, act on it, and give clear feedback to others.
  • Able to prioritize tasks and deliver quality work on time.
  • Mandarin Chinese, required for daily work with our client.
  • English at an adequate level, for meetings, documentation, and collaboration with English-speaking colleagues and clients. Native English fluency is not required.

Strongly preferred

  • Console or PC experience on a shipped AA or AAA title.
  • Scripting with Unity C# or Lua for prototyping and tuning.
  • Experience with designing mini games or user-generated content, professional or personal.
  • Experience shipping both single-player and multiplayer systems.
     

Bonus

  • Experience with other engines and scripting tools, such as Unreal Engine, Blueprints, or Godot.
  • Experience with UI/UX/HUD or monetization design.
  • Experience with level design or level integration.
  • Experience leading a game feature with a small team of designers or a cross-functional team.
  • Experience working across multiple studios in a co-development setting.
  • Experience working in an English-speaking environment.
  • Willing to travel and work at our other studios in China when a project needs it.
