Position Summary
At UnitedHealthcare, we are transforming the healthcare experience through innovative technology. As a Senior Software Engineer in the Claims Global Claims Operations (GCO) team, you will join us at the forefront of our claims automation initiatives. Our initial automation efforts (AI 1.0) have already delivered significant annual savings. Now, as we transition to our next-generation automated solutions (AI 10.0) combined with our retail-focused efforts, we have the potential to fundamentally optimize our operating structure.
The ideal candidate combines strong software engineering expertise with modern cloud technologies, DevOps practices, and experience integrating AI/ML capabilities into production-grade applications.
Job Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable enterprise-grade applications supporting Agentic AI and claims automation use cases.
- Build high-performance backend services and APIs for AI-assisted workflows, intelligent decision systems, and orchestration platforms.
- Develop responsive and intuitive frontend applications using modern JavaScript frameworks (React.js preferred) and tanstack query
- Implement reusable components, design patterns, and secure coding practices across the application stack.
- Lead design discussions, code reviews, and technical solutioning sessions.
- Mentor junior engineers and promote engineering best practices.
- Contribute to architecture reviews, governance processes, and technology strategy.
- Partner with cross-functional teams to ensure timely and high-quality delivery.
- Collaborate with product managers, architects, AI engineers, and business stakeholders to translate requirements into technical solutions.
- Architect, develop, and deploy applications on AWS (Lambda, ECS/EKS, API Gateway, S3, DynamoDB, Aurora, Bedrock, SageMaker).
- Design event-driven and microservices architectures for scalable AI workloads.
- Implement Infrastructure-as-Code using Terraform and/or CloudFormation.
- Optimize cloud infrastructure for performance, security, reliability, and cost efficiency.
- Build and optimize CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, or Jenkins.
- Implement automated testing strategies including unit, integration, API, and end-to-end testing.
- Adopt DevOps and LLMOps best practices for model deployment, monitoring, observability, and lifecycle management.
- Improve system availability, fault tolerance, and operational excellence through monitoring and alerting frameworks.
- Develop APIs and services supporting document ingestion, knowledge management, vector search, and workflow execution.
- Design and optimize SQL/NoSQL, Vector Databases, Knowledge Graphs, Semantic Search for transactional and AI-driven workloads.
- Enable integration with enterprise systems, claims platforms, and external healthcare services.
- Support data validation, monitoring, and governance requirements for AI solutions.
- Design, develop, and deploy AI-powered solutions to address complex business challenges with emphasis on responsible use of AIac

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field.
- 8 years of full-stack engineering experience with strong backend and frontend development expertise.
- 5 years of experience applying software engineering principles, design patterns, scalability, reliability, observability, and secure coding practices.
- 5 years of hands-on experience in Python development, including scalable RESTful APIs and microservices architecture.
- 4 years of experience with React.js and modern frontend development frameworks and practices.
- 4 years of experience working on AWS cloud platform, including compute, storage, networking, IAM, monitoring, and security services.
- 3 years of experience building and managing CI/CD pipelines, containerization (Docker), Kubernetes, and DevOps practices.
- 3 years of experience designing and developing distributed, event-driven applications in enterprise environments.
- 2 years of experience integrating AI/ML models, GenAI services, or intelligent automation capabilities into production applications.
- 2 years of experience leading technical discussions, driving solution design, and collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with Agentic AI, Generative AI platforms, Large Language Models (LLMs), and AI orchestration frameworks.
- Experience implementing Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), prompt engineering, semantic search, and knowledge retrieval systems.
- Familiarity with vector databases such as Pinecone, FAISS, OpenSearch.
- Experience with AWS Bedrock, SageMaker, or enterprise AI platforms.
- Exposure to AgentOps, LLMOps/MLOps ecosystems including model registries, evaluation frameworks, monitoring systems, and AI governance controls.
- Experience with workflow orchestration platforms, autonomous agents, and enterprise automation frameworks.
- Knowledge of healthcare, claims processing, provider operations, utilization management, or regulated environments.
- Experience working with enterprise architecture governance and secure software development lifecycle practices.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical thinking, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
Healthcare Domain Exposure (Preferred)
- Experience with healthcare datasets (claims, eligibility, prior authorization, provider directories)
- Understanding of clinical or operational workflows (provider calls, documentation, adjudication steps)
- Awareness of healthcare data sensitivity and HIPAA - like compliance expectations

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you'll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $91,700 to $163,700 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
