Job Overview

Working under limited supervision, the Sr. Financial Accountant supports Wawanesa's financial reporting requirements by preparing timely, complete, and accurate financial and regulatory reports, month/year end closing procedures and conducts accounting, regulatory, and tax research. The role also supports the development, implementation, and management of the Branch budget, applying fundamental budgetary concepts, practices, and procedures.

Compensation: Depends on experience and varies by location.

California Compensation:

  • The pay range for this position is $82,477 - $123,715 annually, depending on experience.
  • This position is considered exempt for purposes of wage-hour law.

Colorado Compensation:

  • The pay range for this position is $74,979 - $118,092 annually, depending on experience.
  • This position is considered exempt for purposes of wage-hour law.

Nevada Compensation:

  • The pay range for this position is $78,728 - $118,092 annually, depending on experience.
  • This position is considered exempt for purposes of wage-hour law.

Washington Compensation:

  • The pay range for this position is $74,979 - $112,468 annually, depending on experience.
  • This position is considered exempt for purposes of wage-hour law.

Job Responsibilities

  • Plans and executes the Branch budget including periodic budget vs. actual variance analysis.
  • Monitors Branch performance indicators, highlighting trends and analyzing causes.
  • Develops and prepares rolling monthly forecast workpapers and reports for Branch Management.
  • Supports Company-wide implementation of new budget software and methodologies.
  • Supports Branch and Company-wide technology and process change implementations.
  • Prepares and updates Internal Control over Financial Reporting (ICOFR) documentation.
  • Prepares and files regulatory and Board financial statements including supporting schedules.
  • Prepares management reports and analysis.
  • Prepares and files corporate income tax and premium tax returns, including preparing periodic Federal Income Tax provision/expense calculations, supporting work papers and journal entries.
  • Assists with supporting periodic external, internal, and regulatory audits.
  • Prepares general ledger, subledger, and bank account reconciliations and analysis.
  • Calculates expense allocations and accruals, and prepare, review, and analyze associated journal entries.
  • Updates investment and fixed asset accounting modules to ensure investments, assets, and depreciation are completely and accurately recorded.
  • Ensures that general ledger closing procedures are completed timely and accurately.
  • Stays current with emerging and relevant tax, statutory and GAAP authoritative guidance to formulate recommendations on accounting transaction, reporting, and/or other issue treatment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Arts/Science degree with a concentration in Accountancy, Finance and/or Economics required.
  • 3-7 plus years of combined Public and Corporate Accounting experience. Corporate income tax and Insurance Industry experience preferred. Budget development & variance analysis, is a strong plus.
  • Working toward or achievement of CPA designation would be considered an asset.
  • Position requires the ability to maintain focus, perspective, composure and professionalism under pressure and/or uncertain conditions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate ideas clearly, ask clarifying questions to ensure a proper understanding, and demonstrate a clear and concise writing style.
  • Strong analysis and problem-solving skills with the ability to collect information from relevant sources, conduct detailed analysis of information to identify relationships, issues, and involve others to ask detailed questions to elicit detailed and relevant information.
  • Intermediate skill level required with Microsoft Office Suite, email, as well as PC and web-based applications. PeopleSoft experience is a plus.
  • Proficient in general ledger, fixed asset, investment and tax accounting.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and to work toward team objectives.
  • Committed to continuous learning to stay current on emerging trends and relevant accounting guidance.
  • Ability to plan and organize work effectively and manage changing workloads.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure quality of the work product.
  • Position requires the ability to lift to 10 lbs. daily.
  • Position requires medium mobility throughout the branch buildings to meet internal customer demands.
  • Position requires moving storage boxes or picking up record keeping logs or binders as needed.
