A Senior File Transfer Engineer is a specialised IT
professional responsible for designing, implementing, maintaining, and
supporting secure and efficient file transfer solutions within an organisation.
With a focus on IBM Sterling File Gateway (SFG), the role requires deep
technical understanding of managed file transfer (MFT) platforms, strong
troubleshooting skills, and the ability to ensure compliance, security, and
reliability of data exchanges.
· Solution Design and Architecture:
· Lead the design and architecture of file
transfer solutions using IBM SFG, ensuring scalability, reliability, and
security to meet business and regulatory requirements.
· Implementation and Configuration:
· Install, configure, and optimise IBM SFG
environments, including integration with other enterprise systems, setting up
routing channels, partner profiles, and managing certificates.
· Monitoring and Maintenance:
· Proactively monitor file transfer operations,
troubleshoot issues, perform regular health checks, and carry out routine
maintenance to ensure optimal performance and minimal downtime.
· Security and Compliance:
· Implement security best practices such as
encryption, authentication, and access controls. Ensure compliance with
relevant data protection regulations (e.g., GDPR, POPIA) and internal policies.
· Incident Management and Troubleshooting:
· Lead the response to file transfer failures,
errors, and incidents. Use advanced diagnostic tools and logs within IBM SFG to
identify root causes and implement effective resolutions.
· Process Automation:
· Develop and maintain scripts, workflows, and
automation processes to streamline file transfer operations and reduce manual
intervention.
· Documentation and Training:
· Create and maintain comprehensive documentation
for configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting guides. Provide training
and mentorship to junior engineers and other stakeholders.
· Stakeholder Collaboration:
· Work closely with business users, application
owners, and external partners to understand file transfer requirements, resolve
issues, and deliver solutions that meet organisational goals.
· Upgrades and Patch Management:
· Plan and execute upgrades, patches, and
migrations of IBM SFG environments to ensure systems remain secure and up to
date.
· Capacity Planning and Performance Optimisation:
· Analyse usage patterns, forecast growth, and
optimise system resources to accommodate increasing file transfer volumes and
new business needs.
· Partner Onboarding:
· Set up and manage trading partner profiles,
onboarding new partners, and configuring routing channels and protocols (e.g.,
SFTP, AS2, FTP, HTTP) specific to IBM SFG.
· Routing and Document Flows:
· Design and maintain routing channel templates,
document flows, and business processes within SFG to ensure efficient and
secure file movements.
· Protocol Management:
· Manage and troubleshoot multiple data transfer
protocols supported by IBM SFG, ensuring compatibility and reliability across
diverse partner ecosystems.
· System Integration:
· Integrate IBM SFG with other enterprise
applications such as ERP, CRM, or middleware platforms using APIs, adapters, or
custom scripts.
· Audit and Reporting:
· Leverage SFG’s audit and reporting capabilities
to track file transfers, generate compliance reports, and support forensic
investigations when required.
