The Role
The Senior Experimental Systems Engineer will lead a team to design and execute experiments for validating and calibrating quantum computer subsystems. Responsibilities include optimizing system performance, developing validation procedures, and collaborating with various technical teams to inform future designs and methodologies.
Summary Generated by Built In

We believe quantum computing will change everything.  It will have the power to transform the foundations of giant industries that rely on intensive computation.  PsiQuantum is on a mission to build the world’s first useful quantum computer, capable of delivering these transformative results.  We know that means it will need 1 million qubits, error correction, a scalable architecture and a data center footprint.

By harnessing the laws of quantum physics, quantum computers can provide exponential performance increases over today’s most powerful supercomputers, offering the potential for extraordinary advances across a broad range of industries including climate, energy, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, finance, agriculture, transportation, materials design, and many more.

PsiQuantum is uniquely positioned to deliver on the promise of quantum computing years earlier than our competitors. Our architecture is based on photonics which gives us the ability to produce our components using existing high-volume semiconductor manufacturing processes, the same processes that are today producing billions of chips for telecom and consumer electronics applications. Since photons don’t feel heat, we can take advantage of existing cryogenic cooling systems, the kind that have been operating at facilities like the Stanford Linear Accelerator (SLAC).  And because photons are in fact light, they can move between subsystems at tremendous speed using standard fiber connectivity.

Our team is building a utility scale quantum computer and the software tools needed to build fault tolerant quantum applications. We’re a highly motivated and collaborative group focused on a singular goal - building the world’s first useful quantum computer on the fastest path possible.

There’s much more work to be done and we are looking for exceptional talent to join us on this extraordinary journey!
Job Summary

PsiQuantum is opening a new laboratory in Brisbane, Australia, to focus on the validation and high-performance operation—and related methodology—of our quantum photonic systems. We are looking for an experienced, motivated researcher to lead the experimental efforts within the laboratory. The successful candidate will be responsible for building and leading a focused team that will design and execute experiments to validate and calibrate quantum computer subsystems to fault-tolerant levels and beyond at high cadence. They will identify physical processes that limit photonic quantum performance and feedback new understandings to improve designs and operations of future generation of quantum hardware, and new generations of validation methodologies. They will collaborate broadly with design and engineering teams across all of PsiQuantum’s technical disciplines, including optics, quantum optics, photonics, electronics, cryogenics, quantum architecture, and software to understand system performance and inform engineering models.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of scientists and engineers to design and execute experiments to optimize and quantify integrated photonic quantum computer systems performance at high cadence.
  • Work with system design teams to define and document validation objectives and test plans. Manage equipment, time, and people resources to maximize the value of experimental efforts.
  • Develop validation, calibration, self-test, and control procedures for novel quantum photonic systems, extending capabilities beyond current state-of-the-art.
  • Analyze, reduce, and deliver experimental data. Work with other engineering teams to ensure that the data informs engineering models for system performance.
  • Debug complex systems and work with other engineering teams to conduct failure analysis and resolve design or manufacturing issues as appropriate.
  • Communicate experimental outcomes clearly to internal and external stakeholders.

Experience/Qualifications

  • PhD in Experimental Quantum Physics, Photonic/Electrical Engineering, or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience post-degree and a demonstrated track record of delivering high quality research outcomes. Supervisorial experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the design and execution of complex quantum experiments in a cross-functional environment.
  • Broad technical knowledge with ability to dive deep into required technical areas of our systems including hardware, software, controls, precision measurement, photonics, and quantum information.
  • Software development for instrumentation, controls, test equipment, and data analysis.
  • Proven team player with an ability to work effectively across departments, sites, time zones.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with an ability to communicate effectively to a variety of audiences including senior leadership and technical experts.
  • Demonstrated interest in PsiQuantum’s mission and vision for quantum computing, with an ability to contribute within a fast-paced start-up environment consistent with PsiQuantum’s values of communication, collaboration, respect, results, and challenge.

What We Do

Quantum computing will be a world-changing technology with the potential to unlock powerful advances in medicine, energy, finance and beyond. At PsiQuantum, we’re focused on building the world’s first useful quantum computer.

A useful quantum computer requires at least 1,000,000 qubits and error correction. We believe photonics is the only path to building a useful quantum computer.

Our team at PsiQuantum is a mix of quantum physicists, semiconductor, systems, and software engineers, system architects and more. Error correction is at the centre of everything we do; and we focus on solving real-world problems.

If you’re interested in joining our team, we are always open to hearing from exceptional people interested in working on one of the defining technologies of our lifetime.
