Our comprehensive portfolio is built to address the challenges of today and adapt the future, ensuring long-term sustainability and success for our customers.
Ameresco is seeking an entrepreneurial Senior Engineering Manager to lead our growing Renewable Energy Engineering team. This is a 100% remote position offering complete geographical flexibility and a high degree of autonomy to manage your team and drive projects forward from anywhere across the country.
In this leadership role, you will be the technical anchor and strategic supervisor for the development of energy savings performance contracts (ESPCs) that involve behind-the-meter and front-of-meter solar PV, battery energy storage (BESS), microgrid, and EV charging infrastructure projects for commercial, industrial, governmental, municipal, and institutional clients nationwide.
Working in close partnership with Sales Executives and project stakeholders, you will lead a team of dedicated engineers who serve as the technical backbone of the project development process—from early feasibility through construction handoff, construction support, and operations. The ideal candidate pairs deep renewable energy expertise with an entrepreneurial mindset to treat every project as their own business venture. In addition, you bring strong emotional intelligence to mentor engineers, navigate complex client dynamics, and foster a collaborative, highly autonomous remote team culture.
Responsibilities:
Leadership & People Management
- Direct Team Management: Recruit, manage, mentor, and inspire a high-performing, multi-disciplinary team of renewable energy development engineers in a fully remote environment.
- Culture & Team Leadership: Foster a culture of trust, psychological safety, and strong interpersonal awareness. Guide your team through complex project challenges, support career development, and manage cross-functional relationships with empathy and clarity.
- Resource Allocation: Act with high autonomy to assign engineering resources, manage workloads, and balance team priorities across a diverse national project pipeline.
Entrepreneurial Project Ownership & Technical Sales Strategy
- Project Autonomy: Act as the ultimate technical owner for a portfolio of complex multi-million dollar energy projects, driving technical strategy, risk mitigation, and execution from inception to completion.
- Strategic Sales Partnership: Partner with Sales Executives to align engineering solutions with business development goals. Participate in high-stakes customer meetings, presenting technical visions credibly and tailoring complex concepts to C-suite stakeholders.
- Proposal Oversight: Oversee and approve the preparation of technical proposals, including system layouts, energy production estimates, equipment specs, risk assessments, and project schedules.
- Incentive Strategy: Guide the team in leveraging complex incentive programs (ITC, IRA adders, SGIP, USDA REAP, net metering) to maximize project economics and create competitive advantages.
Technical Project Development Oversight
- Engineering Excellence: Champion top-tier technical development of solar PV, BESS, microgrid, and EV charging projects from early feasibility through construction handoff.
- System Optimization: Oversee advanced energy modeling, battery dispatch optimization, utility cost/rate analysis, and microgrid resiliency designs.
- Vendor & Utility Management: Direct utility interconnection strategies (NEM, SGIP, Rule 21, etc.). Act as the escalation point for complex technical hurdles with utilities, AHJs, outside engineers, and vendors.
- Financial & Budgetary Ownership: Review and approve financial models, project pricing, construction budgets, and project schedules in tandem with Pre-Construction teams.
Construction Support & Continuous Improvement
- Execution Support: Ensure seamless handoff to Project Management, providing high-level technical guidance during material procurement and construction phases.
- Performance Accountability: Oversee the technical components of commissioning, project closeout, and post-construction savings evaluations.
- Process Innovation: Continuously evaluate and improve internal engineering processes, design tools, and best practices to scale the remote engineering department.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in renewable energy project development, engineering design, or a related field.
- Demonstrated track record of successfully leading the development of utility-scale or complex commercial/industrial solar PV and/or battery energy storage (BESS) projects.
- Ability to review confidential US security information.
Additional Qualifications:
- Strong emotional intelligence: Proven ability to lead with empathy, resolve conflicts, mentor remote staff, and build strong relationships with diverse customer profiles.
- Entrepreneurial Mindset: Comfortable with ambiguity; a proactive self-starter who thrives with minimal oversight, enjoys building processes from scratch, and treats project budgets/timelines with true ownership.
- Technical Certifications: Professional Engineering (PE) license, NABCEP PV Installation/Technical Sales certification, or Certified Energy Manager (CEM) is strongly preferred.
- Advanced Technical Domain: Strong experience with complex microgrid design, islanding configurations, grid services, and dispatch optimization modeling.
- Modeling Software Proficiency: Deep familiarity with or ability to guide teams using PVSyst, Helioscope, Aurora, Energy Toolbase, Xendee, and/or HOMER Pro.
- Financial & Analytical Acumen: Advanced capability to analyze utility rate structures and validate financial metrics (NPV, IRR, simple payback).
- Remote Mastery: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills tailored for an asynchronous, 100% remote workplace.
- Travel: Ability to travel up to 25% of the time for site visits, team alignment meetings, and high-priority customer presentations.
