Job Description:
As a Design Engineer, you will be focused on continuous improvement of current production solutions, ranging from single part resourcing support to redesign of sub-systems for performance, quality, and/or cost initiatives in commercial on-highway applications.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Apply technical standards and methodologies to develop solutions to maintain current products opportunities to manage quality and cost using sound engineering principles.
- Determine appropriate DVP&R elements to validate the product and execute to completion by initiating test requests, supporting data review and interpretation and a thorough review of test reports.
- Work with suppliers, Purchasing, and Supplier Quality Engineers to support cost reduction, sourcing decisions and design changes.
- Develop a solid understanding of the manufacturing and assembly impacts to design.
- Improve or develop new transmission component and sub-system designs using sound engineering principles, GD&T and tolerance stacks.
- Perform engineering calculations related to component loading, basic stress and fatigue life calculations for general component sizing.
- Design new part concepts in CAD, review FEA results and make design judgements based on those results.
- Direct and collaborate with specialized CAD designers to develop alternative design concepts. Ensure accurate and timely completion of new designs and modifications to components and subsystems.
- Execute DFMEA and align product designs to Best Practices.
- Develop Bill of Materials.
- Work with internal advanced analysis group as required.
- Perform design trade-off analyses and optimization.
- Perform failure analysis of hardware in cooperation with internal metallurgical lab.
- Execute other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
- 5+ years of engineering experience in design of powertrain components
- Experience in CAD modeling
- Experience in developing and executing DVP&Rs
- Ability to read and interpret drawings and blueprints, fluent in GD&T
- Knowledge and understanding in material strength
- Experience in transmission design and powertrain integration preferred
- Experience in other common analysis software (e.g. AMESim, MATLAB/Simulink) preferred
- Strong oral and written business communication skills
- Strong organization and analytical ability
