Summary Generated by Built In

Join MISO’s Operations Support Engineering (OSE) team as a Senior Engineer II (Energy Market Systems) - the group that supports Day‑Ahead and Real‑Time market operations. In this role, you’ll work hands‑on with EMS tools in the control room to help keep power flowing reliably and efficiently. As a Senior Engineer, you will develop and maintain the Energy and Ancillary Services Market, creating innovative solutions to operational challenges. Your work directly impacts grid reliability as you help optimize next‑day energy plans using SCUC for unit commitment and SCED for real‑time dispatch. We’re looking for engineers with EMS experience, strong power‑systems fundamentals, SQL and Python proficiency, and familiarity with market architecture and NERC/FERC guidelines.

What You'll Do as our Senior Engineer II:

  • Help improve the Energy Market System (EMS) by gathering needs, shaping solutions, testing updates, and supporting the system once changes go live.
  • Validate and deploy new network and commercial models into the EMS to ensure accuracy and reliability across the market platform.
  • Model and optimize market operations by running SCUC (unit commitment), SCED (unit dispatch), and LMP analyses to improve commitment and dispatch decisions.
  • Investigate and explain market outcomes; troubleshoot issues and answer questions for MISO Operations and external stakeholders; provide clear guidance on market design and how it’s implemented in MISO’s systems.
  • Lead cross‑functional, complex projects with System Operations, Market Operations, Technology/Architecture, and Market Design; apply advanced power‑systems engineering to evaluate options and recommend solutions with enterprise impact.
  • Deliver ongoing production support and continuous improvements (enhance, automate, maintain, and troubleshoot tools and applications); collaborate on major system upgrades and new market products; mentor Engineers on best practices.

What You'll Bring as our Senior Engineer II:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, or Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology (required).
  • Master’s Degree (preferred).
  • PhD (preferred).
  • Strong understanding of market optimization methods, including power flow analysis, SCED, and SCUC, with the ability to analyze and model complex energy‑market scenarios.
  • Four or more years of relevant experience (eight preferred), ideally within the energy industry or research environments tied to energy markets, operations, or market design.
  • Proficiency with SQL (query writing, stored procedures, reverse engineering, and troubleshooting) and comfort analyzing large, complex datasets.
  • Ability to research and formulate mathematical and optimization equations to develop, validate, and refine algorithms that support market optimization and system performance.
  • Hands-on experience with software development processes, including requirements gathering, design, testing, troubleshooting, and production support.
  • Ability to understand Regional Transmission Organization (RTO) market structure, interpret market outcomes, and evaluate complex business problems using data-driven reasoning.
  • Willingness to participate in a 24x7 on‑call rotation and apply critical thinking to diagnose and resolve market‑system or application issues as they arise.

Appropriate level will be determined based upon experience and knowledge.
