Ever imagined saying, “I helped launch the future of transportation”?

We’re rewriting the rules of urban mobility. At Vay, customers tap a button and a car arrives - with no one inside - powered by our world-first Remote Driving technology on real public streets.

We’re live in Las Vegas and scaling fast, powered by a strategic investment of up to $410 million from Grab. Our mission is simple: replace private car ownership with a faster, cleaner, door-to-door mobility model. If you want to build something real, visible, and genuinely transformative, you’ll feel right at home here.

What’s happening at Vay:
  • First to roll out vehicles in both Europe and the USA on public roads without a human being inside & one of only two companies in the States operating a commercial driverless service.
  • We've partnered with Kodiak to bring remote-driving technology to autonomous trucks in the Bay Area, showcasing our ability to integrate our system into heavy-duty commercial vehicles and expand the applications of our tech across the US.
  • We’ve completed 10’s of thousands of trips so far and are busy multiplying our Las Vegas fleet just to meet demand!
  • ...And soon we’ll be expanding across the US & Europe 🚀
Why this role is exciting:

At Vay, cars are remotely operated in real time from our Driving Centers in Berlin and Las Vegas,  a capability few companies worldwide have achieved on public roads. As a (Senior) Embedded Software Engineer, you will work on the safety-critical software stack that directly controls vehicle functions. The code you build will have a measurable impact on vehicle safety and reliability during real-world deployments.

What you’ll be driving

You will help build the safety-critical firmware that allows real vehicles to be operated remotely on public roads. Your work will directly influence how a car accelerates, steers, brakes, monitors itself for faults, and reacts in emergency situations. You’ll be:

  • Designing, implementing, and verifying embedded software for safe remote operation of vehicles on public roads.
  • Extending and maintaining validation infrastructure (simulation, HIL, in-vehicle)
  • Improving automation in development workflows and tooling
  • Collaborating with hardware, motion control, and systems engineers to solve challenges unique to remote driving
  • If experienced in FPGA/VHDL, you’ll also be contributing to both microcontroller (C) and FPGA domains, broadening the impact of the role
What are we looking for

We’re looking for a (Senior) Embedded Software Engineer with a solid technical foundation and hands-on experience who is adaptable, eager to learn, and motivated by building safety-critical systems. You enjoy working close to hardware, care deeply about correctness and safety, and love seeing your code move real physical systems. You should apply if you have:

  • Strong experience with C programming for embedded systems
  • Familiarity with RTOS (real-time operating systems)
  • Experience with testing environments (simulation, HIL, in-vehicle validation)
  • Problem-solving mindset, attention to detail, results-oriented
Nice to have’s
  • FPGA programming in VHDL

Tech environment you will work in:

  • Embedded C on microcontrollers
  • RTOS-based real-time systems
  • Simulation, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL), and real-vehicle validation
  • CAN and CAN FD vehicle communication interfaces
  • Safety-oriented coding standards such as ISO 26262 and MISRA-C
  • Git-based version control and Linux-based CI/CD pipelines
  • FPGA programming in VHDL: enables contribution across both microcontroller (C) and FPGA domains

What We Do

Vay's first commercial service is now live in Las Vegas, Nevada: By-minute rental cars. Delivered driverless.
Vay is the first company to drive a car without a person inside on public streets in Europe and the US, enabled by teledriving (e.g. remote driving) technology. Vay aims to launch a sustainable, affordable, door-to-door mobility service with remotely driven ("teledriven") cars: Teledrivers bring an electric car to the customer and pick it up after the journey is completed, eliminating the time-consuming search for a parking spot for the customer. While in the car, the customers drive themselves.
Vay sees teledriving as an alternative approach to autonomous driving and aims to gradually introduce autonomous functions in its system based on high-quality teledrive data.

Vay was founded in Berlin in 2018 by Thomas von der Ohe, Fabrizio Scelsi and Bogdan Djukic. Vay's team of 150+ people combines the best of two worlds - software & product experience from Silicon Valley and automotive hardware & safety engineering from Europe. The company has offices in Berlin and Hamburg, Germany, as well as in Las Vegas, USA. Vay raised a USD 95m Series B funding round.
