Description

The Role: Senior Electrical Engineer

Who You Are:

You’re a Senior Electrical Engineer who will take ownership of the hardware design of our emergency communication devices - sustaining and hardening the current product line while leading the transition to a next-generation, connected/digital platform.

This role sits at the center of that transition: you will keep today's field-deployed hardware reliable while architecting the electrical and firmware foundation for tomorrow's digital products.

Who We Are:

Established in 1989 Kings III is a growing, dynamic company. We’re a six-time winner of DFW Top Workplaces and nationally as a USA Today Top Workplace in 2020-2025. We’re on a mission for change – for our communities, our customers, and our company. If you see yourself as a builder and change agent, this is the right place for you.

More than 12% of our employees have been with the company for 10+ years, and an impressive 25% have been with us 5+ years. How do we do it? Here's what our employees say. We seek out creative employees who love opportunities for continuous learning and growth. We value innovation in not just our products, but the way we work, sell, and grow every day. We celebrate change and are always looking for ways to do things better!

What You’ll Do:

Hardware & Firmware Design

  • Own electrical and firmware design across the product line — from maintaining fielded emergency phones (analog/POTS and existing cellular variants) to architecting next-generation digital/connected devices
  • Drive schematic capture, PCB layout, and hardware bring-up for both legacy revisions and new digital hardware.
  • Design cellular hardware to meet UL/FCC, PTCRB, and FirstNet certification requirements from the outset of next-generation device architecture.
  • Design power architecture for next generation digital/connected devices, including battery backup, power management ICs, and low-power/sleep modes for cellular modules
  • Lead firmware architecture for next-generation connected devices — cellular modules, embedded Linux/RTOS platforms, secure boot, OTA update mechanisms
  • Design and implement communication stacks (cellular, Wi-Fi, or LTE-M/NB-IoT) integrating with cloud-based monitoring and telemetry
  • Partner with cloud/software teams to define device-to-cloud data protocols and APIs
  • Build in remote diagnostics, fleet health monitoring, and security (encryption, authentication, secure firmware signing) from the ground up
  • Own and maintain clean, accurate design documentation — BOMs, schematics, PCB layouts, and related engineering records — across both fielded and next-generation hardware

Field & Manufacturing Support

  • Root-cause field failures reported by Service and the EDC; drive corrective action from schematic/PCB level through firmware
  • Manage component obsolescence, second-sourcing, and DFM/DFT issues across the product line
  • Support manufacturing and test engineering for production runs, current and new

Cross-Functional & Compliance

  • Work directly with Product Management (reporting line to VP Product Development) to translate roadmap into engineering requirements
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to capture feature requirements for digital architecture and resolve recurring issues with existing products
  • Support UL/FCC, PTCRB, and FirstNet certification testing for new cellular hardware revisions
  • Mentor junior engineers and contractor/offshore development resources

What You’ll Bring:

  • BS in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering (or equivalent experience); 8+ years in electrical/embedded hardware design
  • Strong schematic capture and PCB design/review (Altium or equivalent); comfortable owning a board from concept through production
  • Solid firmware development skills in C/C++ for microcontrollers (ARM Cortex-M or similar); RTOS experience (FreeRTOS, Zephyr, or similar)
  • Experience with cellular modules (Quectel, Telit, u-blox, or similar) and IoT connectivity protocols (MQTT, TLS/DTLS)
  • Debugging with JTAG/SWD, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers; strong lab bring-up skills
  • Experience carrying a legacy hardware product through a connected/digital transition
  • Familiarity with UL/FCC, PTCRB, and FirstNet certification processes for cellular hardware
  • Experience with power architecture for battery-backed, field-deployed electronics (power management ICs, battery charging/backup, low-power design)

Nice to Have:

  • Experience in life-safety, security, or emergency communications hardware
  • Embedded Linux experience
  • Exposure to cloud IoT platforms (AWS IoT Core or similar)
