Description

The Week is looking for a writer with news experience for our national news and opinion magazine. You will engage with substantial previous experience covering news. The Senior Editor will distill a broad range of news and opinion into thoughtful, succinct, and lively summaries in The Week's distinctive style. For this role you will report into the Executive Editor.

What you'll be doing

  • Assess the main news of the week in politics and culture to find the most important and engaging stories.
  • Sifting, blending, and contrasting the opinions of columnists from the left, right, and center to help readers make sense of the news.
  • Write several articles for every issue in a format that values compression, clarity, wit, and brevity.
  • Explaining the news in a way that gives busy readers “all they need to know about everything that matters"
  • Participating in the entire news team's planning of how to cover the news.

Experience that will put you ahead of the curve

  • Track record in news journalism to the highest standard
  • Work at pace with appropriate sector knowledge and authority
  • Work to tight deadlines
  • 3+ years of experience with and interest in current affairs and world news
  • Familiarity with The Week’s approach to news and a good sense of what interests our readers
  • Written skills and able adapt to different tones
