Job Description:

What’s the role

The Senior Economist will play a pivotal role within the Economics Team in Shell’s Strategy Insights and Scenarios department, reporting to the Chief Economist. The team is responsible for providing macro, energy, and policy economics advice to keep Senior Executives, businesses and functions up to date on the latest economic developments and what they might mean for Shell and to inform longer-term strategy development and Shell scenario thinking.

What you’ll be doing

  • Assess and analyse the interlinkages between energy and the economy, and the interactions between energy markets, energy policies, and the wider economy and what it means for the macroeconomic outlook at the global and country level.
  • Monitor and analyse the implications of energy transition and industrial policies on global competitiveness, trade and finance, and the wider macroeconomic/industrial landscape. 
  • Develop a robust understanding of the links between financial markets and the real economy, in the context of issues such as geo-economic fragmentation, public debt sustainability, climate risks, energy transition/climate finance.
  • Conduct rigorous economic research and analysis to support scenario development and collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate economic insights into broader scenario narratives.
  • Frame and present findings and recommendations to senior management and external stakeholders.
  • Represent Shell at industry conferences and events, sharing insights and engaging with external experts.

What you bring

  • Advanced degree in Economics (Masters or higher), with a focus on macroeconomics
  • Strong understanding of global economic trends, energy markets, and policy developments.
  • Extensive experience in economic research and analysis, preferably including energy and energy transition.
  • Excellent analytical and quantitative skills.
  • Proven ability to communicate complex economic concepts to non-specialist audiences.
  • Strong presentation and report-writing skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Experience with scenario planning and modelling is a plus.
  • Analytical Thinking: Ability to analyse complex data and synthesise key insights.
  • Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Collaboration: Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Strategic Thinking: Ability to think long-term and develop strategic insights.
