Senior Director of Software Systems & Digital Platforms (m/f/d), based in Munich

Position Overview

We are seeking a visionary and execution-focused Senior Director of Software Engineering to lead our software organization across embedded systems and digital health solutions. This role is pivotal in driving innovation, compliance, and delivery excellence in a regulated medical device environment. You will oversee cross-functional teams spanning Software Engineering, Software Test Engineering, DevOps, and Product Delivery, ensuring alignment with product strategy, quality standards, and market needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership
    • Define and execute the software engineering roadmap across embedded and non-embedded platforms.
    • Partner with Global Strategic Marketing, Quality, Regulatory Affairs, and other stakeholders to align software capabilities with business goals.
  • Team Management & Development
    • Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team of engineers, testers, DevOps specialists, and delivery managers.
    • Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Technical Oversight
    • Guide architecture decisions for embedded firmware, cloud-based platforms, and connectivity solutions.
    • Ensure robust design controls and software lifecycle processes compliant with FDA, ISO 13485, IEC 62304, and cybersecurity standards.
  • Operational Excellence
    • Drive agile development practices, CI/CD pipelines, and scalable DevOps infrastructure.
    • Oversee software verification and validation strategies, risk management, and release planning.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
    • Collaborate with Hardware, Systems Engineering, and Quality teams to ensure seamless integration and compliance.
    • Represent software engineering in executive forums and external audits.
  • Development Partner Collaboration
    • Demonstrated experience working with external development partners, contract manufacturers, or design firms.
    • Skilled in managing joint development efforts, ensuring clear communication, milestone tracking, and compliance across organizations.

Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, or equivalent.
  • Several years of software engineering experience, with some years in leadership roles.
  • Proven track record in medical device software development (Class II/III preferred).
  • Deep understanding of embedded systems, cloud technologies, and regulated software development.
  • Experience with Agile/Scrum, DevOps, and modern software delivery practices.
  • Familiarity with HL7, FHIR, and IoT protocols.
  • Prior involvement in FDA 510(k), PMA, or EU MDR submissions.
  • Strong communication, stakeholder management, and strategic planning skills.
  • Experience with AI/ML integration in healthcare applications.
  • The ability to travel 25 %
