Senior Director, Innovative Medicine Project Delivery, R&D

Position Summary

The Senior Director, Project Delivery is responsible for leading the Project Managers,  Directors and a portfolio of capital projects supporting the Innovative Medicine business. This leader provides end-to-end leadership across project planning, design, procurement, construction, commissioning, qualification, operational readiness, and turnover while ensuring alignment with business objectives, operational requirements, and enterprise standards.

The role serves as the primary E&PS Project Delivery partner for the assigned business vertical and is accountable for translating business strategies, operational needs, and facility requirements into executable capital investment programs. The Senior Director will lead and/or support multidisciplinary teams and external partners while building strong relationships across the business, Engineering & Design, Facilities Management, Real Estate, and Global Engineering / Technical Operations organizations.

The successful candidate combines strong project delivery expertise with business acumen, stakeholder management, portfolio leadership, and strategic planning capabilities to deliver both project and business outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Business Partnership

  • Serve as the primary E&PS Project Delivery partner for the assigned business organization.

  • Develop a deep understanding of business strategies, growth priorities, operational requirements, and facility needs.

  • Partner with business, engineering, facilities, and real estate leaders to shape project demand and capital investment strategies.

  • Provide strategic guidance during the execution of feasibility studies, business case development, investment planning, and supporting the business project prioritization activities.

  • Build trusted relationships with senior stakeholders and act as a strategic advisor on capital project delivery matters.

 

Project Delivery Leadership

  • Lead a portfolio of complex capital projects from concept through operational handover (commercial production, first lot to stock, clinical manufacturing batches or similar final product out the door activities as needed).

  • Full accountability and oversight of all project delivery phases, including feasibility, front-end planning, design, procurement, construction, commissioning.  In partnership with the business transition to oversight and support as needed during the qualification, startup, and turnover.

  • Ensure projects meet business objectives while achieving safety, quality, compliance, cost, and schedule expectations.

  • Lead execution within active operating environments while minimizing disruption to business operations.

  • Direct and manage Architecture & Engineering firms, Construction Managers, General Contractors, Commissioning partners, specialty consultants, and other external service providers.

  • Drive effective governance, risk management, and decision-making throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Lead and enforce the use of standardized project delivery process IDEA tools, and best practices.

Portfolio Leadership & Capital Planning

  • Lead a portfolio of capital projects supporting the assigned business area.

  • Support portfolio planning, investment prioritization, and capital allocation processes.

  • Partner with business leaders to develop project roadmaps and long-range capital strategies.

  • Identify project interdependencies, portfolio risks, resource constraints, and execution challenges.

  • Utilize portfolio metrics and project performance data to support business decision-making and investment planning.

  • Support development of site master plans and long-term facility strategies where applicable.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Architecture, or related technical discipline.

  • Minimum 15 years of progressive leadership experience in capital project delivery, engineering, construction management, or program leadership.

  • Demonstrated experience managing complex capital projects, programs, or portfolios in regulated industries.

  • Extensive experience managing project scope, cost, schedule, risk, quality, and stakeholder expectations.

  • Experience managing Architecture & Engineering firms, Construction Managers, General Contractors, EPC firms, commissioning providers, and other external delivery partners.

  • Strong understanding of project delivery processes, project controls, governance, and risk management.

  • Experience leading cross-functional teams in complex matrix organizations.

  • Strong communication, influencing, stakeholder management, and executive presentation skills.

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required.

Preferred

  • Experience leading complex capital investments and partnering across project planning, design, construction, commissioning, qualification, operational readiness, and turnover activities. Candidates with direct end-to-end project delivery experience from feasibility through operational turnover to manufacturing a plus.

  • Experience with Front-End Planning (FEP), Front-End Loading (FEL), project definition, alternatives analysis, business case development, and capital planning.

  • Experience in managing portfolios of projects and capital investments.

  • Experience supporting Advanced Therapies, Pharmaceutical Manufacturing, Biologics, Research & Development, Laboratories, Technical Operations, or regulated environments in heavy industries. 

  • Experience developing site master plans, facility strategies, or long-range capital investment plans.

  • Demonstrated business acumen, including capital investment prioritization and value-based decision making.

  • Experience partnering directly with business leadership, engineering organizations, facilities management teams, and real estate organizations.

  • PMP, FPX, Lean Six Sigma, or equivalent professional certifications a plus.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is :

$178,000.00 - $307,050.00

Additional Description for Pay Transparency:

Subject to the terms of their respective plans, employees are eligible to participate in the Company’s consolidated retirement plan (pension) and savings plan (401(k)).

This position is eligible to participate in the Company’s long-term incentive program.

Subject to the terms of their respective policies and date of hire, employees are eligible for the following time off benefits:
Vacation –120 hours per calendar year
Sick time - 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Colorado –48 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington –56 hours per calendar year
Holiday pay, including Floating Holidays –13 days per calendar year
Work, Personal and Family Time - up to 40 hours per calendar year
Parental Leave – 480 hours within one year of the birth/adoption/foster care of a child
Bereavement Leave – 240 hours for an immediate family member: 40 hours for an extended family member per calendar year
Caregiver Leave – 80 hours in a 52-week rolling period10 days
