The Senior Director of Health Optimization Content Strategy is responsible for shaping and executing comprehensive enterprise-wide content and engagement strategy that advances the mission of the Health Optimization Team (HOT). Reporting to the HOT Chief of Staff, this leader will have responsibility for developing compelling, data-driven narratives that elevate the visibility, impact, and integration of health equity across UnitedHealth Group, Optum, and UnitedHealthcare.
This role will serve as a strategic advisor to senior leadership, guiding the development of content that supports business growth, stakeholder engagement, reputation alignment, and internal cultural transformation. The Senior Director will ensure that health equity is embedded in the enterprise's voice, brand, and strategic communications, and will drive innovation in how the organization communicates its value and leadership in health equity.
This position is responsible for collaborating with the VP of Health Optimization and the VP of Community Health & Social Impact to craft high-impact narratives reflective of work across internal and external equity interventions and impact investing. This role will be the main conduit to UHG communications teams to develop material to support communications efforts beyond the Sustainability Report. This will include development of external messaging for press releases/newsroom stories, content for speaking engagements for senior leaders, and internal messaging to support employee engagement and People Team efforts. The position is also responsible for identifying messaging - aligned to communications expectations and policies - to advance market presence for the Sr. VP Health Optimization Strategy and other leaders.
The Senior Director will lead a team with additional content responsibilities, including the Director of Content, who serves as the main point of contact for marketing, communication, and sales support inquiries from internal business partners. Leadership responsibilities include ensuring the Content team engages with Health Optimization leaders as appropriate to confirm required content to be leveraged or to collaborate in the development in new customized materials. The position also collaborates with internal partners (Sales, Communications, Creative, Proposal, Legal, Policy, Regulatory, Product and Marketing) and external vendors or agency partners to create and implement content that supports the businesses' objectives.
The Senior Director will also play a critical role in monitoring emerging trends in health equity, proactively identifying opportunities to amplify impactful work through targeted content and engagement initiatives. By fostering collaboration across departments and leveraging analytics, this leader will ensure that all communications are both evidence-based and resonate with the intended audiences. Additionally, the position requires a commitment to continuous learning and adaptation, ensuring the organization remains at the forefront of health equity discourse and practice.

Primary Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership & Vision:
- Lead the development and execution of a multi-year content strategy that aligns with enterprise reputation goals, health equity priorities, and business development objectives
- Serve as a strategic partner to the SVP of Health Optimization Strategy and other senior leaders to shape the enterprise narrative around health equity
- Translate complex health equity initiatives into compelling stories for diverse audiences including investors, customers, regulators, employees, and the public
Enterprise Engagement & Influence:
- Oversee the creation of internal and external content that supports employee engagement, leadership visibility, and cultural transformation
- Partner with Communications, Marketing, Sales, Legal, Policy, and Product, and other internal teams to ensure health equity messaging is integrated across all channels and touchpoints
- Represent HOT in executive-level forums, cross-functional steering committees, and enterprise-wide initiatives
Content Development & Innovation:
- Lead a team responsible for developing high-impact content including investor materials, Sustainability reports, RFP language, thought leadership, and executive communications
- Ensuring content reflects the latest data, trends, and impact metrics from initiatives such as Catalyst, Communities of Health, Impact Investments, and health disparity reduction programs
- Drive innovation in content formats, platforms, and storytelling techniques to enhance reach and resonance
Measurement & Market Intelligence:
- Develop and oversee a robust measurement framework to assess the effectiveness of content strategies and engagement efforts
- Monitor competitive landscape and market trends to ensure the enterprise's health equity narrative remains differentiated and industry leading
- Provide strategic insights to inform business development, proposal strategy, and customer engagement
- Governance & Knowledge Management
- Oversee the governance of health equity content repositories including Sparq and other knowledge management platforms
- Ensure content is regularly refreshed, compliant, and aligned with enterprise standards and brand guidelines
- Establish scalable processes for content intake, review, approval, and dissemination across the enterprise
Responsible for the development, execution, and community engagement for the organizational strategy and approach regarding Health Equity. Health equity encompasses identifying and remedying health disparities in access to care, presence of disease, and health outcomes due to socioeconomic class, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or other social drivers of inequity.

Required Qualifications:
- 10+ years of experience in strategic communications, content strategy, marketing, or related fields
- Demonstrated experience work closely with senior leadership
- Deep understanding of health equity and healthcare industry dynamics
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and influence at the executive level
- Experience developing content for investor relations, board communications, and enterprise-wide initiatives
- Solid analytical skills and experience with content performance measurement

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The salary for this role will range from $159,300 to $273,200 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
