General Summary:

The Senior Director of Commercial Finance is a senior leader within the US Commercial Finance organization and serves as the primary strategic business partner to the US Commercial Vice President and Business Unit Lead. This leader will partner with the BU Lead to develop options and guide resource allocation to balance growth and profitability.  This highly visible role leads a team responsible for strategic financial management, revenue forecasting, analytics, investment management, and value creation across the business. 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership & Business Partnership

  • Serve as the finance business partner to the US Commercial Vice President and Business Unit Lead, leading strategic decision support and shaping long term commercial strategy and execution 

  • Influence senior executives across Commercial, Medical, Human Resources, Global Finance, and Corporate functions to align financial plans with enterprise goals. 

  • Anticipate market, competitive, and regulatory dynamics and provide actionable insights that guide commercial strategy and resource allocation. 

Financial Strategy, Planning, and Performance Management

  • Lead the annual budget, long range planning process, and monthly forecasting cycles for the US Commercial BU, ensuring integration with global planning frameworks. 

  • Oversee US revenue and operating expense management and drive analytical rigor and scenario planning to support portfolio optimization and launch readiness. 

  • Identify value drivers and enterprise risks and develop innovative, data driven solutions to enable profitable and sustainable growth.

Leadership, Culture, and Team Development 

  • Lead and develop a high performing team with capabilities aligned to Vertex leadership behaviors and culture. 

  • Build a culture of accountability, operational excellence, and continuous improvement across the Commercial Finance organization. 

  • Partner with HR on workforce planning and organizational design to support the growth of the US Commercial business. 

Cross Functional Collaboration and Enterprise Influence 

  • Partner with Global Commercial Finance, Accounting, Tax, and Investor Relations to strengthen financial systems, processes, and communication. 

  • Drive alignment during key business cycles ensuring readiness for launches, lifecycle management, and competitive or market shifts. 

  • Represent US Commercial Finance in enterprise forums providing strategic, data driven perspectives that influence business direction. 

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Expert financial modeling, valuation, analytics, and scenario planning capabilities. 

  • Strategic thinker with the ability to translate complex information into useful insights for senior leaders. 

  • Exceptional executive communication and presentation skills. 

  • Ability to lead through ambiguity, drive organizational change, and innovate in a fast paced environment. 

  • Deep business acumen and understanding of the biotechnology market and commercial strategy. 

  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams and foster an inclusive, development oriented culture. 

  • Expertise with Excel and PowerPoint and working knowledge of Hyperion or similar planning tools. 

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field required.  Master of Business Administration or other advanced degree strongly preferred. 
  • Fifteen or more years of progressive finance experience in commercial, FP and A, or strategic roles including experience supporting senior executives or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Demonstrated success leading financial strategy in a complex and highly regulated environment. 
  • Extensive experience in drug development, commercialization, launch planning, pricing, reimbursement, and US market access. 
  • Proven ability to influence executives and lead enterprise level initiatives. 

Pay Range:

$212,000 - $318,000

Disclosure Statement:

The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.

2.    On-Site: work five days per week on-site with ad hoc flexibility.
