I. Job Summary

Recognized across the organization for leadership of WM Renewable Energy’s Commercial activities, specifically  Power, Gas and Renewables Marketing as well as the Commercial Management of the portfolio’s operating assets. 

We are looking for strong Energy Marketing/Sales/Trading expertise with experience across multiple commodities and geographies as well as relevant experience in Energy Asset Management. Renewable Energy Product experience is required.

Prior experience in commercializing and managing the profitability of energy assets potentially including storage, pipelines and electric transmission. Prior experience of Independent System Operators (ISO’s) and capacity markets as well as a deep understanding of the North American gas pipeline infrastructure. 

Leader at developing new business, managing client relationships and managing energy commodity portfolios. Understands financial risk management, physical energy logistics as well as legal/ contractual requirements when executing transactions. Background in Risk Control and Management would be helpful but not essential.

Must have at least 5 -10 years of prior management/supervisory experience in energy commodity markets. This is a Houston based position reporting to the Head of WM’s Renewable Energy Business.


II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Commercial management of WMRE’s portfolio of assets.
  • Strong relationships internally with key WM stakeholders as well as WMRE Operations and Project Development.
  • Executes agreed-upon sales, trading and hedging strategies and generating multi-hundred million dollars of revenue every year while managing WMRE’s power, renewables and gas commodity risk.
  • Establish a robust marketing and trading strategy and multi-year portfolio execution plan to monetize our production.
  • Leads a team of Marketing/Trading/Business Development employees (15 -20 employees). Responsible for growing, coaching, directing and motivating them to be successful.
  • Works with WMRE senior management to establish strategy and direct resources as appropriate.
  • Internally leverages WM’s fleet and WM’s corporate customers to rapidly grow and extend WMRE’s marketing footprint across North America.
  • Actively manage the portfolio risks (price, credit, operational, regulatory) by developing reports and action plans consistent with WMRE’s overall Risk Policy
  • Works closely with WM and WMRE functions in plant operations, compliance and regulatory to establish, manage and monetize the inventory available for sale.
  • Experienced in the marketing of renewable energy products and commodities.
  • Works closely with internal and external customers, suppliers and other partners to resolve problems, respond to suggestions for improvement and enhancements, test, refine and institutionalize solutions.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Familiar with energy transaction I.T. systems (Nymex, ICE, Nodal) as well as Over-the-Counter transactions.
  • Prior experience working with corporate credit functions and mid and back-office systems is essential.
  • Background in Renewable Credits preferred (power, RINS and other carbon-free products)

III.  Qualifications

A. Education and Experience

  • Education: Bachelor's degree (accredited) required.
  • Experience: 15+ years of relevant work experience in energy commodity markets (in addition to education requirement) of which at least 5-10 years in a Leadership role required.

Office: This job primarily operates in a professional office environment and routinely requires the use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, copy machines, etc.

Skills Required
