We are looking for a Senior Director, Electrical Engineering & Microgrids to join our team in one of today’s most exciting technologies. This role will report to VP, Engineering and is based in San Jose, CA. This is a fully on-site, in office role 5 days a week.

The Senior Director, Electrical Engineering & Microgrids is a senior technical execution leader responsible for the design, delivery, and operational performance of complex electrical and microgrid systems in Bloom Energy. This role owns end‑to‑end technical execution, from system architecture and detailed engineering through product development and deployment ensuring solutions meet safety, reliability, performance, schedule, and cost objectives.

The role provides deep technical leadership across medium‑ and low‑voltage power systems, inverter‑based generation, fuel cells, energy storage, protection, controls, communications, and utility interconnection. As the senior technical authority, the Senior Director is accountable for engineering decisions, design quality, system validation, and resolution of complex technical and field issues.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Strategy

  • Own the technical vision, strategy, and roadmap for electrical engineering and microgrid systems, aligned with company objectives and market needs
  • Contribute to enterprise‑level strategy and translate it into clear, cross‑functional engineering priorities
  • Anticipate technology, market, and regulatory trends impacting long‑term company positioning
  • Serve as a senior technical interface with executives, customers, and customer‑facing commercial teams and support commercial opportunities through technical due diligence, architectural proposals and presentations
  • Interface with customers, utilities, partners, and regulators on large, complex systems
  • Evaluate new technologies, vendors, and partnerships to improve performance and cost

Technical Leadership

  • Provide technical leadership for complex, multi‑disciplinary electrical and microgrid systems across the full life cycle, from concept and design through deployment, commissioning and operations
  • Lead architecture, design, and validation of microgrids, including medium‑ and low‑voltage power systems, fuel‑cell‑based generation, energy storage systems (BESS and supercapacitors), protection, controls, and communications
  • Ensure designs meet safety, reliability, performance, and cost objectives
  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards (NEC, IEEE, UL, IEC, and utility interconnection requirements)
  • Own technical risk management, design reviews, and root‑cause analysis for field and system issues
  • Drive continuous improvement in design quality, safety, and repeatability

People & Execution

  • Build, mentor, and scale high‑performing electrical engineering and microgrid controls teams
  • Foster a culture of engineering rigor, accountability, collaboration, and innovation
  • Partner closely with Operations, Site Installation, and Commercial teams to ensure successful execution

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field (Master’s or PhD preferred)
  • 15+ years of progressive experience in electrical power systems, microgrids, inverter‑based systems, or distributed energy resources (DERs)
  • 7+ years of experience in engineering leadership roles with people and technical accountability
  • Deep expertise in:
    • Electrical engineering fundamentals
    • Microgrid controls, protection, and system integration
    • Utility interconnection requirements and grid codes
    • Energy storage systems and integration
    • Power system design and analysis
  • Proven track record delivering complex, multi‑disciplinary engineering programs from concept through deployment
  • Strong understanding of field execution, commissioning, and operational considerations
  • Strategic thinker with strong execution focus and engineering judgment
  • Comfortable operating at both deep technical levels and executive leadership levels
  • Collaborative leader who thrives in fast‑paced, cross‑functional environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with grid‑interactive and/or islanded microgrid systems
  • Background in power electronics, inverter technologies, or controls software
  • Experience scaling engineering teams in growth‑stage or product‑driven organizations
  • Familiarity with microgrids for data centers, utilities, commercial & industrial (C&I), campuses, or critical infrastructure
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
