What You’ll Be Doing:

Summary

The Sr. Director of Software Engineering over the Data Engineering Platform has responsibility for the Data Engineering Platform used across Evolent.  The team they will lead will work with the other Data Engineering teams at Evolent especially in the Client Data Engineering and Common Data Engineering areas to define best practices and standards that will be codified in software solutions (shared libraries).  Those best practices and standards and potential solutions extend to Data Governance, Data Quality, and Data Observability.  This may include implementing a data catalog to improve data literacy across Evolent and providing solutions that will facilitate easier performance analysis and error resolution and improved data quality by data engineering teams The solutions and standards provided by the team will also be used by our Data Science/AI teams in the DS and AI solutions they are building.  The technology foundation is based on Microsoft’s Fabric Data Platform and leverages Python and Spark heavily. 

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Data Engineering Platform team with responsibility for the design, development, delivery, and operations of platform software components and collaborate with the infrastructure organization on the infrastructure components of the core data platform
  • Partner with executive leadership, product management, and other stakeholders to define technology roadmaps and long-term strategies related to Evolent’s data platform.
  • Provide strategic direction and leadership to the data engineering organization, aligning technical objectives with business goals.
  • Develop and enforce best practices for software development, architecture, and quality assurance.
  • Build and maintain a strong engineering culture focused on innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Lead the implementation of advanced data observability practices to enhance troubleshooting efficiency, optimize performance, and ensure high-quality data pipelines, enabling proactive issue detection and resolution.
  • Mentor and develop engineering managers and senior technical staff, fostering leadership and technical growth.
  • Manage budgets, resource planning, and performance metrics to ensure the organization operates efficiently.
  • Represent the engineering organization in executive-level discussions and communicate progress, risks, and opportunities effectively.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field
  • 12+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 7+ years in leadership roles managing distributed teams
  • Proficiency in Agile development methodologies and scaling Agile practices across teams
  • Exceptional leadership and team-building skills, with a focus on fostering a culture of innovation and accountability
  • Proven track record of delivering complex, enterprise-scale software projects on time and within budget
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to align technical strategies with organizational goals and priorities
  • Outstanding communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence at all levels of the organization
  • Strong technical expertise in software architecture and modern data pipeline development
  • Deep understanding of cloud data platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS, GCP)
  • Development of modern, resilient data pipelines in Python and PySpark
  • Delivery of data pipelines using modern DevOps practices
  • Automated testing of data pipelines and the implementation of data quality checks to support greater data observability and reliability
  • Experience with data lake technologies like Databricks, Microsoft Fabric, or Snowflake
  • Experience with Microsoft Fabric and Microsoft Purview is preferred
  • Familiarity with data pipeline development tools and frameworks like dbt, Great Expectations, Databricks Live Tables, Airflow, and Dagster is preferred
  • Understanding of event-driven data pipeline orchestration. Knowledge of Domain Driven Design is preferred
  • Understanding of FHIR and experience with a commercial FHIR implementation (e.g., Microsoft AHDS, Smile, firely, Onyx) is preferred
  • Proficiency in Power BI is preferred
  • Experience with data governance tooling like data catalogs is preferred

Technical Requirements:

We require that all employees have the following technical capability at their home: High speed internet over 10 Mbps and, specifically for all call center employees, the ability to plug in directly to the home internet router. These at-home technical requirements are subject to change with any scheduled re-opening of our office locations.

The expected base salary/wage range for this position is $170,000 - 210,000. This position is also eligible for a bonus component that would be dependent on pre-defined performance factors. As part of our total compensation package, Evolent is proud to offer comprehensive benefits (including health insurance benefits) to qualifying employees. All compensation determinations are based on the skills and experience required for the position and commensurate with experience of selected individuals, which may vary above and below the stated amounts.
