Democratizing aerospace by increasing access to world-class propulsion
The Role

Ursa Major was founded to address a critical shortfall in the U.S. industrial base and bring a new model to aerospace and defense systems: we design and manufacture the world’s leading propulsion systems for space, hypersonic applications, and missile systems.

Our products and technologies require an extraordinary team – a team that will mold tomorrow’s technologies while deploying today’s best. We are an intrinsically motivated team that has a passion for solving problems and empowering each other every day to develop our skills, knowing that there is always room for growth.

Ursa Major is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Director of Business Development & Capture Management to lead our efforts in securing contracts related to the federal government, the Department of Defense (DOD), and Prime Contracts. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of success in business development within the aerospace and defense industry, with a focus on cultivating relationships, identifying opportunities, and closing deals.

This role could be located in either Washington D.C., Dayton, Ohio, or Huntsville, Alabama. It would require 25-50% travel to D.C. if remote.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute strategic, cross-functional business development plans to expand Ursa Major’s presence in the federal government and DOD sectors.
  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities, focusing on prime contracts, subcontracting opportunities, and strategic partnerships.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key decision-makers, stakeholders, and potential partners within the federal government and defense industry.
  • Lead the capture process for targeted opportunities, from opportunity identification through proposal submission and contract award.
  • Manage growth efforts within budget to achieve AOP and 5YR bookings and sales objectives.
  • Collaborate closely with internal stakeholders, including executive leadership, program managers, and technical teams, to develop winning strategies and proposals.
  • Provide market intelligence and analysis to inform business strategy and decision-making.
  • Represent Ursa Major at industry conferences, trade shows, and networking events to promote our capabilities and identify potential business opportunities.
  • Monitor and analyze market trends, competitor activities, and customer needs to identify emerging opportunities and threats.

Required Qualifications:

  • Proven track record of success in identifying, pursuing, and winning prime contracts and subcontracting opportunities.
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Engineering, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in business development, sales, or marketing within the aerospace and defense industry, with a focus on federal government and DOD contracts.
  • Strong understanding of the federal procurement process, including familiarity with FAR/DFARS regulations and contract vehicles (e.g., IDIQs, GWACs, BPAs).
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively interface with all levels of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to develop and execute business development plans to achieve organizational goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Willingness to travel as needed to meet AOP and 5YR bookings and sales objectives.
  • This position requires that the employee be eligible and maintain eligibility for a Secret Clearance.

Benefits Include:

  • Unlimited PTO - Vacation, Sick, Personal, and Bereavement
  • Paid parental and Adoptive Leave
  • Medical, Dental and Vision Insurance
  • Tax Advantage Accounts (HSA/FSA)
  • Employer Paid Short and Long Term Disability, Basic Life, AD&D
  • Additional Benefit Options Including Voluntary Life and Emergency Medical Transport
  • EAP Program
  • Retirement Savings Plan - Traditional 401(k) and a Roth 401(k)
  • Company stock options

What We Do

At Ursa Major, we are powering the future of aerospace. We see aerospace advancement as a technological imperative and we’re accelerating the industry as the leading source of world-class propulsion systems.

We meticulously design, craft, and test engines that are optimized to offer high performance, diverse capability, and unwavering reliability.

Why Work With Us

As much as we value talent, we know that it’s meaningless without the drive, humility, and hunger to work on a team. A team shares a common goal and obsesses about achieving it together. This requires leaving egos at the door and committing to do whatever’s required (within reason) to achieve mission success.
