Position Title: Senior Embedded Build & Release Engineer

Employment Type: Full-time, Existing vacancy

Location: Ottawa ON, Onsite

About Lumentum

At Lumentum, we’re building the tech behind the world’s fastest networks and most advanced systems. Our optical and photonic solutions power everything from AI and cloud computing to data centers, telecom, and advanced manufacturing.

We’re a global team of innovators working where light meets technology, solving big challenges that keep the world connected and moving forward. If shaping the future of connectivity excites you, you’ll fit right in.

Why You’ll Love This Role

You will have real ownership over how a new embedded product gets designed, built, tested, and shipped. This is not a role managing cloud infrastructure, it is a role for a strong build and release engineer who cares about the systems and workflows around the code as much as the code itself: clean architecture, reliable builds, automated testing, and a smooth path from commit to deployed firmware. You will work closely with software, hardware, and QA teams in a collaborative environment that values innovation, quality, and continuous learning.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Design and implement the tools, frameworks, and automation that empower embedded software designers, applying the same clean, maintainable, object-oriented design principles you'd use in product code
  • Build and evolve CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions) tailored to the embedded software development lifecycle
  • Automate build, test, and deployment processes to improve engineering efficiency and product quality
  • Collaborate with software, hardware, and QA teams to streamline development workflows end to end
  • Ensure high standards of code quality, maintainability, and security across the codebase and toolchain
  • Implement and enforce best practices for version control, build systems, and release management
  • Apply core security principles (secrets management, code signing, secure boot considerations) throughout the build and release pipeline
  • Maintain documentation for processes, tools, and infrastructure

What We’re Looking For

Education:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field.

Experience:
The ideal candidate will have:

  • 5+ years of hands-on embedded build and release experience, with strong object-oriented design and implementation skills.
  • Solid understanding of the embedded Secure Development Life Cycle (SDLC), from design through test and release
  • Strong experience working in Linux-based environments
  • Strong experience working with Make (GNU Make) and building/maintaining complex build systems
  • Experience with CI/CD tooling (GitHub Actions or equivalent) — you don't need to be a pipeline specialist, but you should be comfortable owning and improving one

Important: This is not a cloud infrastructure, platform-ops, or "managed services" role. We're not looking for someone who oversees turn-key cloud solutions or wires together off-the-shelf SaaS tools — we need someone who can design and build build/release systems from the ground up, with the software engineering skills to architect real solutions, not just configure existing ones.

Skills:

  • Genuine interest in the tooling, automation, and infrastructure that surrounds embedded software delivery — not just writing application code
  • Commitment to delivering high-quality, maintainable code
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical thinking abilities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • In-depth knowledge of core computer security concepts, including: Asymmetric encryption, Digital signatures and certificates, Secrets management

Perks You’ll Love

  • Flexible time off
  • Health and wellness benefits (physical and mental)
  • Tuition reimbursement and career growth support
  • A workplace built for you: free gym, games room, prayer room
  • Subsidized meals, free coffee/tea
  • Employee stock options and incentive plans
  • A collaborative, innovative, and inclusive culture

Salary Range: $84,650 - $114,550 CAD (flexible).

Final compensation will be determined based on factors such as experience, skills, and qualifications. In line with our commitment to being a great place to work, Lumentum offers competitive total rewards which may include annual bonus, equity, and comprehensive health and welfare benefits.
