Senior DevOps Engineer
Reporting to the Manager of Technical Solutions, the DevOps Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, operation, and continuous improvement of Canada Life's Integration Platform capabilities. This role combines software engineering, platform engineering, and site reliability engineering practices to build, support, and evolve critical integration technologies that enable secure, scalable, and resilient digital solutions across the organization.
The DevOps Engineer will work closely with architecture, development, operations, and business teams to deliver modern integration solutions, improve platform reliability and observability, and ensure enterprise integration services remain available, supportable, and aligned with business needs.
What you will do
- Collaborate with stakeholders to define initiative deliverables and design secure, resilient, cost-effective solutions that meet business, technical, security, and operational requirements.
- Design, build, deploy, and support integration platform capabilities including API management, event-driven architectures, messaging platforms, service mesh technologies, and containerized workloads.
- Build and deploy event-driven solutions utilizing industry best practices for scalability, resiliency, observability, and supportability.
- Execute and continuously improve DevOps, CI/CD, infrastructure automation, and deployment frameworks.
- Proactively identify areas of friction within development, deployment, and operational processes and drive technical solutions that improve efficiency and reliability.
- Partner with development teams to ensure applications and services adhere to platform standards for logging, monitoring, alerting, error handling, resiliency, retry strategies, and operational supportability.
- Lead the troubleshooting and resolution of complex issues, performing root cause analysis and driving corrective actions.
- Monitor platform health, reliability, capacity, and performance while proactively identifying and mitigating operational risks.
- Work with stakeholders, partners, and consumers to modernize existing services and integration solutions.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and lead proof-of-concepts that provide business value and improve platform capabilities.
- Create and maintain technical documentation, operational runbooks, standards, and implementation guides.
- Mentor and support development teams by sharing integration platform best practices and operational expertise.
- Ensure alignment and adherence to enterprise technology, security, risk, and operational standards.
- Design and implement cloud-based solutions that comply with Canada Life's cyber security, data security, and risk requirements.
- Participate in after-hours on-call support and incident response activities for critical platform services.
What you will bring
- 5+ years of experience in DevOps, software engineering, platform engineering, site reliability engineering (SRE), application support, or a related technical discipline within a large and complex organization.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
- Experience designing, building, operating, and supporting enterprise integration platforms and distributed systems.
- Experience working within cloud-based and containerized environments.
- Experience supporting critical production platforms and participating in incident management and operational support activities.
- Experience working within Agile and DevOps delivery models.
- Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams including architecture, development, operations, security, and business stakeholders.
- Strong knowledge of software engineering principles, system design, integration patterns, and operational best practices.
Specific tools / skillsets
Experience with several of the following technologies and practices:
- API Gateway platforms such as Apigee.
- Event streaming and messaging technologies such as Confluent Kafka, ActiveMQ, or equivalent platforms.
- Enterprise integration patterns including APIs, microservices, asynchronous messaging, and event-driven architectures.
- REST and SOAP service development and integration.
- Java and Spring Boot application development.
- Service mesh technologies such as Istio and Tetrate Service Bridge.
- Containerization and orchestration technologies including Docker and Kubernetes.
