NOTE: This role is based in New York City and encourages a minimum of two days per week in the SoHo office. Some roles or teams may require additional in-office attendance if the essential functions of the role require it.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Our design team is currently seeking a Senior Designer to join the Children’s Licensing, Brands & Media Trade Art Department, focusing on graphic novels. In this role, you will be responsible for conceptualizing and designing 10+ titles per season, including book covers and interiors for both original and licensed content, targeting readers from middle grade to young adult. This position requires taking full ownership of each assigned title and becoming well-versed in licensor-provided style guides to ensure brand consistency. The candidate should have a keen eye for detail and extensive print design experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Design: Responsible for all design and production stages of graphic novel covers and interiors, initiating cover/interior ideas, finding talent, and staying current on the latest design trends, tools, and technologies. Ensures that design files meet the imprint's technical standards as defined by the Creative Director. Trusted to take on both lead and priority titles.

Collaboration: Collaborates with the Publisher, Creative Director, and colleagues in Editorial, Production, and Manufacturing to ensure clear communication throughout the book-making process, valuing the contributions of every team member, while maintaining a collegial attitude.

Project Management: Manages timelines, schedules, and deadlines while efficiently routing materials to colleagues in Editorial, Production, and Manufacturing for 5-8 title assignment per season. Ensures projects progress efficiently to completion, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while prioritizing tasks appropriately.

Problem Solving: – Communicates project complications and proactively seeks strategies and solutions for successful project completion, streamlining processes when possible.

Budget Oversight: – Manages project expenses within established budgets, keeping manager informed.

Qualifications

HOW YOU CAN FIT (Qualifications)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• 5-7 years of experience in the publishing industry

• Hands-on experience designing graphic novels

• Highly creative

• Attention to detail

• Excellent communication skills

• Interpersonal skills

• Able to work under pressure

• Excellent computer skills in relevant art/design software

• Experience designing for print and building files for print production

• Work within budgets

Experience and Education:

Experience: Candidates should have worked a minimum of 3 to 4 years in publishing and have experience designing graphic novels.

Education: A Bachelor’s degree in design is preferred.
