Job Summary

In this role, you will serve as a human-centered design leader, helping product teams discover new possibilities and deliver products employees love. This leader has a deep empathy for users, while also understanding business and technology, in order to help your team solve problems creatively and holistically. Your business acumen and experience with value stream analysis will be stand out qualities that address the needs we are currently seeing in our products. Using systems thinking, you will help your business partners envision strategies that leverage context, insights and trends to find new solutions to old problems. Through your creative partnership with a product team you will ensure clear problem framing, help your teams dream big and deliver on their dreams; design experiments to drive a build/test/learn iterations; and deliver great end-to-end product experiences. You will sit at the portfolio level to help your business partners align behind a vision and integrate a portfolio of products to deliver on that vision.

You will work with talented UX/UI designers to ensure the design aligns with user research findings and follows UX best practices. Through your coaching, consulting, and thought leadership, you will help your product team learn human-centered design practices so they understand how design contributes to successful products and can carry forward human-centered design approaches to solve other business problems. You will support the design community through your thought leadership, engagement, and peer mentoring.

As an embedded Design Thinking Strategist, you will also be expected to understand the overarching strategy of the portfolio of work, the dependencies across products and projects, and upstream and downstream impacts to the business. You will be relied upon to apply human centered design techniques, to achieve workshop outcomes, as are appropriate.

Responsibilities

  • Delivering Human-Centered Design

    • Pair with experienced subject matter experts from across the enterprise to achieve project goals and deliver business results.

    • Run value stream analysis and business model canvas activities to help leaders better understand the value we are trying to achieve with the products.

    • Work with product teams and clients to deliver valuable outcomes by facilitating collaborative human-centered design workshops, events, and activities.

    • Partner to facilitate teams through aspects of the human-centered design process such as stakeholder analysis, problem framing, value definition, user research, opportunity prioritization, assumption mapping, light prototyping and storytelling.

    • Lead problem framing to ensure problems are effectively articulated and prioritized.

    • Create strategy, execute and synthesize research to inform business strategy and drive decisions based on user research insights

    • Sit at the portfolio level to help your business partners craft strategic vision. Partner with the business to test business ideas and proactively manage assumptions, dependencies, and risks.

    • Ensure consistent experience across products, including user research efforts and interaction design. Ensure a consistent experience across a portfolio that follows brand guidelines and best UX practices.

    • Assist with determining scope, as well as validating assumptions made when identifying solutions.

    • Coordinate with designers at the product level (if available) on execution of product vision to ensure we build products users love.

    • Support the product teams and influence clients to maintain focus on the evidence-based customer needs.

    • Package and communicate findings and design decisions to team leads and business stakeholders, along with clear actions and next steps.

Basic/Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree Business or Information Technology

  • Minimum of 5 years required related work experience

  • In lieu of Bachelors degree(s) AND 5 year(s) related work experience listed above, High School/GED AND 6 year(s) related work experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in planning and designing a solution for cross-functional teams

  • Experience in applying and teaching human-centered design concepts

  • Experience conducting qualitative research and synthesizing to provide insights, identify opportunities, and generate concepts

  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills with a portfolio of synthesized solutions

  • Previous facilitation experience and proven ability to bring together cross-functional teams to create a solution

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid Mobility Classification – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.
