Position Summary: 

The Senior Design Engineer is responsible for leading the design, development, and continuous improvement of Morbark equipment and systems. This role will lead engineering projects involving steel fabrication, weldments, diesel and gasoline engines, drivetrains, hydraulics, and electronic controls across a broad range of equipment including tree care chippers, stump grinders, industrial chippers, horizontal and vertical grinders, flails, and sawmill equipment. The Senior Design Engineer will provide technical leadership, mentor junior engineers, support cross-functional teams, and drive product innovation, manufacturability, quality improvements, and cost reduction initiatives. This role requires strong engineering expertise, project management capabilities, and the ability to collaborate effectively with manufacturing, operations, sales, and service teams.  

 

 

Essential Functions of the Job:

  1. Designs, develops, or modifies equipment, applying advanced engineering principles and industry best practices.
  2. Analyzes data to determine feasibility of product proposals, design changes, and product improvement initiatives.
  3. Analyzes product or equipment specifications and performance requirements to determine designs that can be produced by existing manufacturing methods.
  4. Leads and coordinates prototype development, manufacturing support activities, and product validation processes.
  5. Prevents or eliminates defects in new or existing products through root cause analysis and continuous improvement initiatives.
  6. Provides technical support to sales, production, service, operations, and cross-functional teams to support business objectives and customer commitments.
  7. Supports manufacturing and updates prints to provide configuration control of product as it is built.
  8. Pursues individual goals and objectives while contributing to achievement of department goals and continuous improvement initiatives.
  9. Maintains records of engineering system changes, product updates, and revision controls as required.
  10. Contributes to systems-related troubleshooting, engineering problem solving, and corrective action implementation.
  11. Analyzes test data and reports to determine if designs meet functional, performance, safety, and manufacturing requirements.
  12. Evaluates engineering test results and determines required design modifications or improvements.
  13. Identifies cost saving opportunities related to product design, manufacturing efficiencies, and engineering processes.
  14. Supports other groups and departments as needed while mentoring junior engineering team members.
  15. Leads engineering projects from concept through implementation while managing timelines, priorities, and deliverables.
  16. Provides technical guidance and mentorship to Design Engineers, Engineering Technicians, and cross-functional teams.
  17. Participates in customer visits, field support activities, and product evaluations as required.
  18. Supports continuous improvement, safety, quality, and operational excellence initiatives across the organization.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA’s):

  • Demonstrated ability to identify applicable design requirements for a given application or product
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of employees, suppliers and customers
  • Good communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Effectively establish understand and communicate with individuals at multiple levels of the organization including shop floor and office
  • Formal Problem-Solving training/skills
  • Experience working with SolidWorks CAD software package is desirable
  • Strong knowledge of hydraulic & electrical systems is desired.
  • Project management experience, interfacing with multiple projects
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft product suite

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in Mechanical Engineering preferred, will consider associates degree and/or previous work experience in lieu of formal education.
  • 8 + years of design engineering related experience, including internship and co-op experiences.
