The Research Data Product team at Elsevier is committed to creating a high-quality collection of enriched research data metadata. They integrate over 30 million records from 3200+ repositories to support institutions in monitoring their research outputs. This empowers university libraries and research offices to make well-informed decisions about Research Data Management by staying informed about researchers' data-sharing practices.
 

About the Role
 

As a Senior Data/Platform Engineer, you will be responsible for designing and implementing big-data applications. Your role will involve contributing to the development of our data product within the Research Data Product team.
 

Responsibilities
 

  • Collaborating as part of a tight-knit, agile, quality-focused team to understand complex product requirements to design and deliver desired outcomes while collaborating with key stakeholders.
  • Engaging in all aspects of the development lifecycle, apply common practices and create good quality software ensuring compliance with company standards for accessibility, security and privacy protection.
  • Identifying opportunities for improvement in the technical solution and implement changes alongside business requirements
  • Keeping abreast of modern technological developments! Ability to drive new developments, implement process changes and disruptive technologies in the organization.
  • Resolving complex technical issues, as necessary, researching and identifying the root cause and providing long-term reliable solutions.
  • Contributing to our organization's growth, share experience, knowledge, mentor less-senior software developers.


Requirements
 

  • Experience and understanding of software engineering design principles and (data) architectures (e.g. data mesh vs data fabric vs data lake, streaming processing, microservices, API-first, event-driven).
  • Understand of data modeling (and layering) principles in a modern big data stack.
  • Expertise in Java based development languages, distributed applications frameworks (such as Spark / Delta), data services, databases (SQL/NoSQL) and/or search indexes (SolR/Elastic).
  • Knowledge and working experience in AWS (or similar), especially with block storage (e.g. S3), data processing (e.g. EMR, Athena/Glue) and messaging services (e.g. SQS) and knowing how to deploy these using infrastructure-as-a-code tools (to safely and predictably provision and manage infrastructure).
  • Experience with software development with code provisioning and CI/CD pipelines utilizing tools like Git and, respectively, Jenkins.
  • Experience working with orchestration frameworks like Airflow or event store systems like Kafka.
  • Kknowledge of software development methodologies, such as Agile or Kanban
