The Senior Database Engineer role is responsible for the maintenance and system optimization of database management systems that are hosted in AWS and Azure cloud providers. This role will work with Development Engineers to support code deployments, provide recommendations to optimize the database system, implement recommendations, participate in a Change Advisory Board (CAB), provide 1stlevel support, participate in an on-call schedule, participate in incidents and incident reviews to determine root cause.
This individual will be part of a highly productive and successful team. Have a strong technical background, excellent problem-solving skills, task management, and excellent communication skills.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
Intake (requests and projects) - 80%
- Track, and fulfill all incoming requests and projects
- Work with business and other technical areas to get clarity on requests and translate to a technical solution.
- Create, update and close Kanban tickets.
- Ensure all stakeholders are communicated to the status of the requests and projects.
Incident Management - 15%
- Work with the Incident Management Team and other technical teams
- Participate in incident calls, provide support and updates as needed.
- Provide remediation steps to mitigate future incidents
- Engage vendors (e.g. Microsoft, Oracle, AWS, Azure) when needed.
- Participate in post incident review discussions (problem analysis, resolution and mitigation of future events).
On-call - 5%
- Participate in on-call rotation
- Respond to automated alerts.
- Bring in other technical teams as needed, based on issue.
- Respond to calls from other technical resources that need assistance.
Job Requirements:
Education, Experience and Technical skills
- Post-secondary education in related field and/or 10+ years relevant work experience
- Min. 5years’ experience in a senior role
- Experience in cloud provided infrastructure (AWS, Azure)
- Experience and in-depth knowledge in popular database systems; Microsoft SQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL.
- Strong understanding of database architecture, design and performance tuning.
- Experience with database backup and recovery, security, and high availability solutions.
