THE ROLE
We are seeking a Senior Database Administrator (DBA) based in Panama to manage our company's database infrastructure and provide technical support and analysis. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing our databases, ensuring data security, and providing technical guidance to other members of the IT department. They will also be expected to stay up to date with emerging database trends and technologies and make recommendations on whether to adopt them.
Overall, the Senior DBA role will have a range of responsibilities related to data migration and remediation, database administration, technical analysis, and performance optimization. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with other teams within the company, evaluate and recommend new technologies, maintain proficiency in relevant programming languages and technologies, and provide technical guidance and support to other members of the IT department.
DUTIES
Data Migration and Remediation
- Migrate mass data from one database/application to another.
- Create data mapping for all types of data fields in multiple applications.
- Remediate data in bulk.
- Prepare data extraction from databases.
Database Administration & Performance Optimisation
- Develop and maintain suitable database management procedures and related documentation.
- Develop, maintain and test suitable Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Plans relevant the data and systems managed.
- Develop and apply principles of good data governance that adhere to data privacy regulations like GDPR.
- Install and configure database software.
- Design and maintain company databases, including creating and modifying tables, managing indexes, and ensuring data integrity.
- Implement and maintain backup, recovery, and high availability strategies.
- Ensure data security by implementing security protocols, managing user accounts and permissions, and monitoring for unusual activity.
- Monitor database performance and make adjustments to improve performance, optimize queries, manage storage, and tune the database for specific needs.
- Build SQL scripts to run SQL scheduled tasks.
- Troubleshoot issues that arise with the company's databases and find solutions to those problems.
Technical Analysis
- Collaborate with other teams within the company, including software developers, network engineers, and security teams, to ensure that the company's databases are functioning optimally and securely.
- Evaluate and recommend new technologies and tools to improve the company's database infrastructure, and make recommendations for hardware and software upgrades or replacements.
- Develop and implement automation and scripting solutions to streamline database management tasks, such as backups, monitoring, and performance tuning.
- Monitor emerging database trends and technologies, such as cloud-based databases or NoSQL databases, and provide recommendations on whether to adopt them or not.
- Maintain proficiency in relevant programming and scripting languages, such as SQL, Python and C# and use them to write scripts, create custom reports, or automate database tasks.
- Provide technical guidance and support to other members of the IT department, including junior DBAs or software developers who need assistance with database-related tasks.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field OR
- Current and recognized relevant industry certifications.
- 5+ years of experience in database administration, preferably in financial services.
- Strong technical skills in Microsoft database management systems, such as SQL Server and related Azure cloud technologies
- Experience with data governance frameworks (e.g., DAMA DMBOK, GDPR).
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and documentation skills.
- Strong understanding of database concepts, including database design, normalization, data modelling, indexing, backup and recovery, performance tuning, and security.
- Proficient with SQL/TSQL query language
- Ability to analyze data, identify patterns and trends, and make recommendations based on the analysis.
- A strong attention to detail and the ability to manage large volumes of data with high accuracy.
- Ability to troubleshoot problems with databases and find solutions to complex technical issues.
- Strong communication skills to collaborate with other teams within the company and convey technical information to non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to adapt to changing technologies and processes and learn new skills and concepts quickly.
- Understanding of industry-specific regulations and compliance requirements, such as those related to data privacy and security.
- Ability to develop and implement automation and scripting solutions to streamline database management tasks.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
- Fluent in reading, writing and speaking English.
