You’ll work hands-on across SQL Server (on-premises and on Azure VMs) and Azure SQL (PaaS) tuning queries, safeguarding data, managing backups and recovery, and keeping our ETL pipelines running. This is a highly technical role for someone who genuinely enjoys living in the data tier.

Occasional travel for team meetings and training may be required.

Key Responsibilities: (What you'll be asked to do)

  • Administer and maintain a variety of multi-terabyte databases across both SQL Server (on-premises and Azure VMs) and Azure SQL (PaaS) platforms.
  • Own backup, restore, and recovery. Design, automate, and regularly test backups to meet defined RPO and RTO targets, and lead recovery efforts when needed.
  • Monitor and tune database and query performance; diagnose and resolve bottlenecks, blocking, and indexing issues across high-volume transactional and analytical workloads.
  • Implement and maintain database security and data privacy controls, including access management, encryption, and auditing in line with our regulatory obligations.
  • Design, build, and maintain SSIS ETL packages and other data integration and data movement workflows.
  • Manage high availability and disaster recovery configurations (Always On availability groups, failover groups, geo-replication), and partner with development teams on schema design, query optimization, and safe deployment of database changes.

The Successful Candidate: (What we're looking for)

  • Deep, hands-on expertise administering SQL Server in production at scale, including very large (multi-terabyte) databases.
  • Strong working knowledge of Azure SQL (PaaS) and the broader Azure data platform; equally comfortable operating in PaaS and IaaS/on-premises models.
  • Demonstrated mastery of performance tuning and execution plans, indexing strategy, wait statistics, and query optimization.
  • Solid command of backup/recovery, high availability, and disaster recovery design and testing, along with database security and data privacy practices (encryption, access control, auditing).
  • Self-directed and dependable; you can be trusted to own critical systems with minimal oversight and serve as a credible second to our Director of Database Services.

Some Requirements:

  • 8+ years of hands-on database administration experience, including significant time managing large-scale, production SQL Server environments.
  • Strong T-SQL skills and demonstrated experience with Azure SQL, SSIS, and database security and privacy controls.

Education:
