Yahoo serves as a trusted guide for hundreds of millions of people globally, helping them achieve their goals online through our portfolio of iconic products.

A Little About Us

Yahoo News’s Data Services team builds engaging, data-driven products that guide people through everyday life decisions. We help people achieve their goals by using data to contextualize and personalize the news, whether that’s helping you choose what shows to watch, discovering which restaurants are creating buzz on social media, or better understanding how inflation is hitting your grocery bill. We do so by creating helpful and delightful digital experiences, backed by robust data sets.

A Lot About You

You are an experienced product designer who is an expert at translating concepts into prototypes and MVPs. You welcome the challenge of building new product experiences from the ground up. You are comfortable being one of the first members of a newly formed team. You love to collaborate with researchers and developers to understand customer problems and design great user experiences. You are highly self-sufficient and also thrive when working together with teammates. You care about the whole product experience and think about the whole user journey. You are curious, driven and know how to find a work-life balance.

Responsibilities:

  • You’ll collaborate with a small team to design, define, build, and deliver new data products and services for Yahoo News.

  • You’ll be responsible for the user experience of new data services. This requires a facility with information architecture, user flows, and creating holistic experiences, as well as the flexibility to design for multiple surfaces: web, app, newsletters, etc.

  • We believe in learning through rapid prototyping. You’ll create wireframes and early versions of new user interfaces or features, and will have to balance the tradeoffs between quick development and achieving high enough fidelity to test key assumptions.

  • You will be involved in testing prototypes with users, and help to figure out the best way to elicit useful feedback from users, test assumptions, and iterate on your designs.

  • We produce products that use data to inform and contextualize. You’ll be the standard-bearer to ensure that we present data in elegant, informative, accurate, and relevant ways.

  • We value and depend on your input! You should actively share your opinions and help shape our visual identity, best practices, product ideas, and team processes.

Qualifications:

  • 7+ professional experience, specifically as a Product or Innovation Designer.

  • Bachelor's degree in design, human-computer interaction (HCI), or equivalent professional experience.

  • Mastery in UX software such as Figma etc.

  • Knowledge of data visualization principles.

  • Design Portfolio demonstrating strong UX and visual design solutions, with an emphasis on identifying and meaningfully solving true user problems.

  • Foundational understanding of HTML and CSS.

  • Exceptional track record to execute on product design strategy and partner with cross functional team members.

  • Experience building world class product experiences, streamline workflows with continuous iteration and improvement.

  • Excellent communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to be a user experience design leader, including usability principles, user research methodology, testing techniques (A/B, Multi-Variant), design theory, and interaction design.

  • Willingness to roll up your sleeve and get things done.

  • Take smart risks and champion new ideas.

  • Excellent communicator

  • Familiarity with data visualization programming languages and libraries is a plus
