He whakamārama mō te tūranga mahi | About the role
As a Senior Data Engineer, you will lead the design and delivery of enterprise grade data solutions that power Watercare’s decision making. This senior technical role provides thought leadership, sets engineering standards, and ensures Watercare’s data platforms are robust, scalable, and future focused.
In this role you will:
Lead the design, build, and optimisation of data pipelines and architectures.
Mentor others and champion bestp ractice engineering, governance, and quality.
Partner closely with Data Engineering Leaders and Architecture teams to shape Watercare’s data landscape.
Evaluate systems for inefficiencies, inaccuracies and opportunities for automation and improvement.

You’re an experienced engineer who leads by example, technically strong, collaborative, and driven to create high quality, future ready data solutions.
You’ll excel if you:
Communicate clearly and influence across technical and nontechnical teams.
Mentor and uplift others, contributing to a high performance culture.
Are solution focused, curious, and proactive in identifying improvements.
Bring deep expertise in data engineering within complex environments
To be considered for this role you will:
Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline.
10+ years’ experience with ETL tools (e.g., Azure Data Factory, AWS Glue).
Advanced SQL expertise plus strong Python skills.
Extensive experience with cloud data platforms (Snowflake, Databricks).
Deep knowledge of data architecture (lakes, warehouses, Lakehouse).
Desirable
CI/CD and IaC experience (Terraform).
Experience working in agile environments.
Strong technical design capability.
