Job DescriptionSenior Data Engineer – Indirect Tax & Customs
London | Hybrid – 3 days per week in office | Permanent
The Opportunity
We're looking for a Senior Data Engineer to help us rethink how data and technology are used across Indirect Tax & Customs.
In a high-volume global e-commerce business, tax outcomes are created across millions of transactions and multiple systems spanning customer orders, payments, fulfilment, logistics, customs, returns and finance.
We want to connect that data.
You'll work directly with Indirect Tax & Customs specialists and with Data, Technology, Finance and Supply Chain teams to build scalable data products, automated controls and analytics that solve real business problems.
This isn't a traditional tax role. You don't need to be a VAT or customs expert.
We're looking for a strong data engineer who is curious about complex business processes and wants to use technology to fundamentally change how they work.
What You'll Do
You'll help us build a trusted data foundation connecting the complete transaction lifecycle:
Order → Payment → Fulfilment → Shipment → Customs → Tax → Return → Accounting → Compliance
You'll:
- Design and build scalable data pipelines across complex transactional systems
- Develop reusable data models supporting tax, customs, finance and supply-chain outcomes
- Automate reconciliations currently dependent on manual data manipulation
- Build controls that analyse complete transaction populations and identify exceptions
- Connect ERP, e-commerce, logistics, customs and tax datasets
- Develop analytics and dashboards that identify risk and financial opportunities
- Improve data quality, lineage and auditability
- Explore opportunities to use automation, machine learning and AI to solve tax and customs challenges.
You'll have the opportunity to work on problems such as:
Can every customs declaration be matched back to the correct shipment and transaction?
Are all transactions reaching the correct VAT reporting process?
Can we automatically identify import VAT that hasn't been recovered?
Can we detect unusual tax outcomes before they become compliance issues?
Can we use data to identify customs duty savings or recovery opportunities?
What We're Looking For
You'll bring strong technical data engineering experience, including:
- Expert T-SQL skills including performance tuning – Microsoft SQL Server
- ETL/ELT pipelines – Databricks, Azure Data Factory, Fabric
- Data-warehousing, dimensional modelling, and dimensional data mart design
- Building analytics and dashboards in Power BI
- APIs and integrations
- Large-scale transactional datasets
- Alteryx or similar analytics automation tools, including building governed, repeatable workflows for data ingestion, transformation, validation, reconciliation and exception reporting
- Data quality and automated testing
- Modern development and version-control practices – GitHub and Azure DevOps.
- Experience with Dynamics 365 for Finance & Operations (D365F&O) is highly desirable
Do I Need Tax Experience?
No.
Experience with VAT, customs or tax technology would be useful, but it isn't essential.
You'll work alongside experienced Indirect Tax & Customs specialists.
We're more interested in your ability to understand complex problems, connect and interrogate data across multiple systems and build scalable solutions.
What Makes This Role Different?
You won't simply receive tickets asking you to build reports.
You'll work directly with the people who understand the business problems.
You'll help decide what should be built, how it should work and how success should be measured.
The ambition is to move from:
Extract → Excel → Reconcile → Fix
to:
Connected Data → Automated Controls → Exceptions → Insight → Prevention.
You'll also help create the data foundation for the next generation of tax technology, including automation, advanced analytics and AI.
What Success Looks Like
During your first year, you'll help us:
- Build a trusted Indirect Tax & Customs data foundation
- Automate key reconciliations
- Introduce continuous, exception-based controls
- Reduce manual spreadsheet-driven processes
- Identify tax and customs leakage opportunities
- Improve visibility of tax risk
- Develop new automation and AI use cases.
If you enjoy solving complex data problems and want to see your engineering work translate directly into measurable business outcomes, we'd love to hear from you.
