THE ROLE & THE TEAM
As a Senior Data Engineer in our central Data Platform team, you will play a critical role in identifying and addressing inefficiencies and ensuring that best practices are consistently applied across all teams. Your primary focus will be to enhance the efficiency of Databricks usage within Zalando. Through continuous innovation and challenging the status quo, you will enable our organization to operate more efficiently by quickly driving actions based on valuable and data-driven insights.
WHAT WE’D LOVE YOU TO DO (AND LOVE DOING)

Work within Zalando’s central data infrastructure team, responsible for mission-critical services across the entire Zalando group, as the subject matter expert

Analyze and monitor Databricks usage to identify low resource utilization, unnecessary overhead, and areas where best practices are not being followed

Collaborate closely with various teams to understand their requirements and support them in implementing optimized solutions. This includes one-on-one or group sessions to walk through changes and ensure successful adoption

Take the initiative in addressing complex business problems proactively, independently exploring and understanding them

Stay up to date on the latest best practices and features, make informed technology and design decisions, take ownership of these choices, and clearly communicate the architectural trade-offs involved
WE'D LOVE TO MEET YOU IF

You possess hands-on experience with Cloud technologies (preferably AWS)

Hands-on experience with Databricks, Spark and performance tuning

You have solid programming skills in Python and SQL (Java or other JVM languages is plus)

Demonstrated experience in analyzing and optimizing cloud resource usage and costs

You excel in communication, have a willingness to challenge the status quo, and the ability to train and consult other engineers

You have a good understanding of modern data engineering practices, including data modeling, data architecture, pipeline as a code, data observability
