I. Job Summary
Handles moderate to complex legal matters and projects related to employment and benefits law. Provides counsel to the company on legal rights and obligations pertaining to areas of law such as Employment, Benefits and Compensation, and Employment-Related Litigation (including single-plaintiff and class action matters).

II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to advise internal clients, including senior leaders, on a broad range of topics and perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The responsibilities include:

  • Assists in preparing, reviewing and, negotiating legal documents on the Company’s behalf
  • Conducts legal research and drafts more significant Corporate legal documents
  • Responds to federal and state charges of discrimination, retaliation and harassment
  • Provides general legal advice and counsel to management (Corporate, Market Area and/or District level) for strategy and policy development on all matters of employment law, including federal and state discrimination laws, the FMLA, the FLSA and paid sick and safe leave laws
  • Provide training to HR professionals and business leaders
  • Reviews legal publications and pending legislation and advises management of changes that impact the Company, business and industry
  • Conducts risk assessment in connection with employment issues impacting company’s customer, vendor, operations, industry and/or business. Advises management on most appropriate response or action.
  • Responsible for management of outside counsel activities as necessary including determining effective business and legal strategy to address litigation and/or other specific operations or Company needs
  • May work at the Corporate level or as directed within a Market Area

III. Supervisory Responsibilities
This job has no supervisory duties but will manage outside counsel and occasionally act as a team lead.
IV. Qualifications
The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications necessary to perform the job.
A. Education and Experience

  • Education: Juris Doctorate (accredited) - required
  • Experience: At least 8 years of relevant experience (in addition to education requirement) working in large firm practicing in employment law or a mix of 8 years working in a large firm and in-house practicing employment law - required
  • Experience with immigration law – preferred
  • Experience with Canadian and/or European employment law - preferred
  • Experience with Department of Transportation regulations - preferred
  • Experience with federal contractor requirements - preferred

B. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements

  • Required: State Bar Licensure
