About the job
We are looking for a Senior Copywriter to support our communications work, translating scientific and technical output into content that reaches the right audiences across social and institutional channels.
The role works closely with in-house scientists to identify and tell the story behind their work and reports to a senior communications colleague. This is an individual contributor role, based on-site in Ispra.
Key responsibilities
Science Storytelling & Copywriting- Collaborate with scientists, particularly those working on sustainability and natural resource management topics, to find and shape compelling stories from published papers and findings.
- Write clear, engaging copy tailored to different target audiences and communication formats.
- Translate complex scientific and technical content into accessible, plain-language communication.
- Produce basic image edits and potentially short videos to accompany written content using tools such as Canva, Photoshop, and/or Illustrator.
- Ensure all visual outputs align with the European Commission's visual identity and communication guidelines.
- Work with external suppliers to develop print and digital communication materials, including brochures and flyers.
- Manage static pages on the institution's public science communication platform.
- Apply basic SEO techniques to improve visibility and performance.
- Draft news announcements based on scientific publications, with input from relevant in-house scientists.
- Regularly create and publish short news articles for the institution's intranet.
- Develop LinkedIn content to promote the directorate's activities, strengths, events, studies, and key developments in the field.
- Write compelling social media copy, often paired with internally produced graphics or existing photography.
- Monitor social media and content performance on a monthly basis.
- Analyze engagement data and recommend improvements to content, format, or communication approaches.
- Draft responses to comments and queries when required.
- Demonstrated experience in copywriting, content creation, and science communication.
- Experience translating complex scientific or technical information into engaging content for non-specialist audiences.
- Experience managing digital communication channels, including websites, intranets, and social media platforms.
- Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills in English.
- Ability to adapt messaging for different audiences and communication formats.
- Strong understanding of digital content creation and social media best practices.
- Basic knowledge of visual content production and design tools such as Canva, Photoshop, or Illustrator.
- Familiarity with website content management and SEO principles.
- Ability to analyze content performance data and implement improvements.
- Strong collaboration and stakeholder management skills.
- Proactive, autonomous, and detail-oriented working style.
- Ability to work effectively with scientific experts and multidisciplinary teams.
