We are seeking a Senior Controls Engineer to be responsible for the development, implementation, testing and startup of technical solutions created by yourself or others, and frequent communication to management and customers of work status updates. You will be working closely with project managers and other engineers to leverage their technical experience and expertise in controls, instrumentation, networking and software development to deliver high-quality and high-value solutions. This position is hybrid, reporting 1-2 day(s) week to the Portage, IN office. All applicants must live within 2 hours of Portage, IN.
You Will:
- Design and implementation of automation and control systems for metals industry applications
- Collaborate with engineering and other support teams to ensure successful project completion
- Responsible for aspects of project budget and schedule requirements
- Assist in the development and maintenance of standards and best practices
- Develop overall system and communication architecture for industrial control projects
- Specify and configure various hardware components such as AC/DC drives, switchgear and industrial control panels
- Perform functional testing of electrical and control systems
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers
- Generate functional requirements documentation and test procedures
- Support the sales team in the development of technical solutions
You Have:
- BS Engineering degree or equivalent educational background
- 7+ years of experience in industrial automation with design, programming, and commissioning of industrial automation equipment. Industrial Automation experience
- Working knowledge and experience with PLC, VSD, and SCADA systems
- Strong software and data communication problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
- Lead field start-up testing of electrical and programmed control systems, drive setup, installation inspection, operational readiness testing, and site acceptance testing.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

You Might Have:
- Hardware Design– Experienced in industrial controls design and hardware selection and familiarity with UL508 and NEC. Motor Starters, Circuit Breakers, Wire Types and Selection, Variable Speed Drives, PLC I/O, Industrial Ethernet Networking. Tools: AutoCAD, SolidWorks
- PLC Programming– Advanced PLC programming capabilities including logic, arithmetic, loop control, and time-based functions. Examples system platforms: Siemens S7-1500, Allen Bradley Control Logix, Emerson PAC Rx3i
- Industrial Variable Speed Drive Systems – Advanced drive systems programming and control in AC and DC systems. Center winders, crosscut, bridle, accumulator, hoisting applications, positioning, servos and more. Example system platforms: Siemens Sinamics, Allen-Bradley Powerflex, Control Techniques Unidrive,
- HMI/SCADA – Ability to create screen mimics of processes and coordinate, display, and record historical data in an Industrial setting. Example system platforms: Inductive Ignition, Allen-Bradley Factory Talk View/Optix, Siemens Simatic WinCC, GE Ifix and Cimplicity, Aveva Intouch
- Industrial Application Software – Higher level software applications and databases including industrial control communication interfaces and process modeling. Server, Terminal Server, Thin Client setup and management. Example system platforms: VMS, Fortran, VB, Java Script, C#.Net, Microsoft SQL Server, HTML5
