About the Role:

The Advanced Materials and Process Group is seeking a Senior Composites R&D Engineer to take a leading role in advancing cutting-edge materials research, innovative manufacturing technologies, and the development of next-generation sustainable products for our Interiors business unit.

As a senior team member, you will lead technology development programs and provide technical expertise in materials design & simulation, testing and characterization, and advanced manufacturing processes. You will also drive sustainability initiatives, develop life cycle assessment methodologies, and contribute to technology strategy and roadmaps.

In this leadership position, you will collaborate across global teams, mentor junior engineers and student associates, and work closely with stakeholders to deliver impactful solutions. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Technology Leadership: Lead research and development efforts on advanced materials and manufacturing processes for next-generation lightweight structures such as fiber reinforced polymer/plastic composites (FRPCs), systems, and sustainable products.
  • Project Oversight: Manage multiple projects, ensuring milestones are met while overseeing technical deliverables, resource allocation, and timelines.
  • Design & Simulation Expertise: Develop and validate material, process and structural design concepts for FRPCs using finite element analysis (FEA), advanced simulation tools and programming languages.
  • Process Development: Drive the development and optimization of innovative manufacturing processes for FRPCs, including automated and robotic solutions.
  • Collaboration: Build and maintain relationships with global teams, research institutions, and industry partners to support joint research efforts and technology transfer.
  • Technology Strategy: Contribute to the development of strategic roadmaps and proposals, ensuring alignment with business goals and future R&D needs.
  • Mentorship: Provide guidance and mentorship to junior engineers fostering technical growth and a collaborative team environment.

Basic Qualifications & Experience:

  • Education: M.Sc. in Mechanical Eng., Aerospace Eng., Materials Science & Eng., Polymer Eng., or related field.
  • Knowledge: Design, analysis and/or manufacturing of fiber reinforced polymer/plastic composites
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in R&D roles/tasks focusing on design, analysis and manufacturing of fiber reinforced polymer/plastic composites (FRPCs) for aerospace, automotive, or related industries.
  • Skills:
    • Strong project management capabilities with a proven track record of delivering technical programs.
    • Advanced technical writing and communication skills.
    • Proficiency in tools like MS Project, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and projects in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications & Experience:

  • Education: Ph.D. in Mechanical Eng., Aerospace Eng., Materials Science & Eng., Polymer Eng., or related fields.
  • Expertise:
    • Deep knowledge of polymers and FRPCs (thermoset and thermoplastic) and their design and manufacturing.
    • Experience with automated/robotic manufacturing, process optimization, and digital engineering techniques for FRPCs.
    • Materials and structural analysis expertise, including lightweight composite structures and FRPCs.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency in FEA tools such as ANSYS, Abaqus, or HyperMesh.
    • Advanced skills in material characterization, testing, and modeling.
  • Global Collaboration: Proven experience working with global teams, securing funding for R&D programs, and collaborating with academia and industry.
