- Audit inpatient trauma coding for accuracy and completeness.
- Validate ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and MS-DRG/APR-DRG assignments.
- Review trauma documentation including:
- Emergency Department records
- Trauma history & physical
- Operative reports
- ICU progress notes
- Discharge summaries
- Ensure correct sequencing of diagnoses and procedures.
- Verify POA (Present on Admission), CC/MCC capture, and trauma-related complications.
- Identify documentation deficiencies and recommend physician queries when required.
- Provide feedback and coaching to coders based on audit findings.
- Maintain quality and productivity targets.
- Prepare audit reports and analyze coding trends.
- Stay updated with ICD-10, Coding Clinic, CMS, and client-specific guidelines.
Skills Required
- Proficiency with ICD-10-CM coding
- Proficiency with ICD-10-PCS coding
- Knowledge of MS-DRG and APR-DRG assignment and grouping
- Experience auditing inpatient trauma coding and reviewing trauma clinical documentation
- Ability to verify POA status and capture CC/MCC and trauma-related complications
- Experience preparing audit reports and analyzing coding trends
- Ability to identify documentation deficiencies and recommend physician queries
- Experience providing feedback and coaching to coding staff
- Familiarity with Coding Clinic guidance and CMS coding guidelines
