The Role

Purpose of Onyx

The Onyx Research Data Tech organization is GSK’s Research data ecosystem which has the capability to bring together, analyze, and power the exploration of data at scale. We partner with scientists across GSK to define and understand their challenges and develop tailored solutions that meet their needs. The goal is to ensure scientists have the right data and insights when they need it to give them a better starting point for and accelerate medical discovery. Ultimately, this helps us get ahead of disease in more predictive and powerful ways.

Onyx is a full-stack shop consisting of product and portfolio leadership, data engineering, infrastructure and DevOps, data / metadata / knowledge platforms, and AI/ML and analysis platforms, all geared toward:​

  • Building a next-generation, metadata- and automation-driven data experience for GSK’s scientists, engineers, and decision-makers, increasing productivity and reducing time spent on “data mechanics”​

  • Providing best-in-class AI/ML and data analysis environments to accelerate our predictive capabilities and attract top-tier talent​

  • Aggressively engineering our data at scale, as one unified asset, to unlock the value of our unique collection of data and predictions in real-time​

A Team Lead - Senior Cloud Engineer is an engineering manager who provides mentorship to a team of Junior and Senior Engineers, fostering professional and technical growth, with a passion for technology and empathy. 

As a Team Lead to Senior Cloud Engineers, you will support your team in taking loosely defined business or technical requirements, architecting and building them to a well-defined specification, and execute on them at a high level. You will encourage a strong focus on quality of systems design and implementation, ensuring the team adopts a well-reasoned and pragmatic approach. Most importantly, you will actively foster and promote a collaborative and positive mindset with healthy ways of working.

Key responsibilities for this role include:

  • Manage a team of four engineers, ensuring their professional growth and providing technical guidance and mentorship with a knowledge-sharing culture.

  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to your team and colleagues, fostering a collaborative and knowledge-sharing culture.

  • Collaborate with Product Managers and development teams to design and deploy scalable and reliable cloud infrastructure solutions using Google Cloud Platform (GCP) managed services.

  • Provide input into the roadmaps of teams representing upstream dependencies to help improve the overall program of work.

  • Stay aligned with industry best practice in cloud infrastructure, continuously looking for opportunities to improve our architecture design, implementation, and security.

  • Provide input into the roadmap including from upstream teams to help improve the overall program of work and manage expectation of stakeholders.

  • Manage relationships with service providers to ensure seamless integration and support of infrastructure solutions.

Why you?Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • Masters + 2 years of experience or Bachelors + 4 years of professional software engineering experience in Cloud and Infrastructure as Code

  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Cloud Build, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps)

  • Understanding and experience with networking, virtualization, storage, containers, serverless, and Kubernetes

  • Experience creating and giving technical presentations and leading discussions

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • Deep knowledge of developing software solutions using at least one common programming language, i.e. Python, TypeScript, Go, Rust, including toolchains for documentation, testing, operations, and observability.

  • Proven experience of software and infrastructure unit, integration, and end-to-end testing.

  • Building distributed systems such as event-based and microservice based architectures using asynchronous messaging.

  • Experience with GitHub for version control, code reviews, and branching strategies.

  • Experience of agile software development environments using tools like Jira and Confluence.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with an ability to document processes, clearly communicate technical concepts, and engage with stakeholders.
