About the Role
The Database Engineering team is seeking a Senior Cloud Database Engineer II to help ensure the reliability, performance, security, and scalability of cloud data platforms supporting business-critical and customer-facing applications. In this role, you will combine reliability engineering and hands-on cloud database expertise across AWS services, helping to improve service resilience, automate operational processes, and support high-performing production environments. You will also collaborate across engineering teams and provide guidance to colleagues while contributing to operational excellence.
Responsibilities
- Create monitoring queries and establish service-level baselines for critical database services
- Design and implement solutions that improve availability, fault tolerance, and recoverability across AWS database platforms
- Participate in on-call rotation to assist in the recovery of major production incidents and act as a senior escalation point
- Plan and execute failover testing within and between AWS regions
- Automate the recovery of systems and components using Infrastructure-as-Code and configuration management
- Implement automation and execute code in production environments to reduce manual effort and operational toil
- Design and maintain monitoring, alerting, and observability solutions, including reusable, code-defined dashboards
- Contribute to post-mortems, root cause analyses, reliability engineering documentation, and mentoring of junior engineers
Requirements
- Hands-on experience operating managed cloud database services such as Aurora MySQL, Amazon RDS, Amazon Redshift, Amazon Dyna
- moDB, or Amazon ElastiCache
- Strong SQL skills with experience in database design, optimization, and troubleshooting, including schema design, query tuning, indexing, locks, and performance bottlenecks
- Proficiency in scripting and automation using Python, Bash, or a comparable language
- Experience designing and implementing monitoring and observability solutions
- Solid understanding of high availability, backup, recovery, and disaster recovery concepts
- Experience participating in on-call rotation, incident response, and root cause analysis
- Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code using CloudFormation or Terraform and CI/CD practices for database change management
- Experience implementing database security, access governance, resiliency patterns, or supporting high-availability production environments
