Role Overview:

Intramotev is seeking a Systems Engineer, Regulation & Certification to lead our efforts in securing federal approval for our groundbreaking autonomous rail vehicles. You will be the crucial bridge between our cutting-edge engineering team and regulatory bodies like the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).

This is not a typical systems engineering role. Your primary objective is to navigate the complex regulatory landscape, shaping our design, development, and testing processes to meet and exceed the stringent safety and certification requirements for operation on the national rail network. You will own the certification strategy, translate regulations into engineering requirements, and build the safety case that allows our technology to be deployed commercially.

This position is full-time, based in our St. Louis, MO headquarters.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead Regulatory Engagement: Serve as the primary engineering point of contact with regulatory agencies like the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), presenting our technology, understanding their concerns, and collaboratively developing paths to approval.
  • Develop Certification Strategy: Define and execute the end-to-end certification roadmap for our autonomous systems, from initial concept through operational deployment.
  • Author the Safety Case: Lead the development and documentation of the comprehensive safety case for our vehicles, including hazard analyses (FMEA, FHA), fault tree analyses, and safety integrity level (SIL) assessments.
  • Translate Regulations into Requirements: Decompose federal regulations, industry standards (e.g., AREMA, IEEE), and safety principles into clear, verifiable system and subsystem requirements for our hardware and software teams.
  • Oversee Verification & Validation (V&V): Define and oversee the V&V plans necessary to demonstrate compliance and prove system safety to regulators. This includes specifying test procedures, analyzing results, and authoring final compliance reports.
  • Drive Safety-Critical Design: Work hand-in-hand with cross-functional engineering teams to guide design decisions and architecture, ensuring our systems are certifiable from the ground up.
  • Customer Support: Perform limited domestic and international travel in support of customer deliveries, testing, demonstrations, and regulatory engagements.

Team Dynamics:

  • Work within dynamic teams of 3-10 members on diverse projects.
  • Foster excellent interpersonal and communication skills to thrive in a collaborative environment.
  • Adapt to evolving project objectives and requirements introduced through prioritized capability enhancements.
  • Engage in occasional domestic or international travel for integration, demonstrations, and customer interactions.

Why Join Us?

  • Build an exciting career with us, as together we develop the next generation of rail, rapidly connecting the past and the future to make a faster and more environmentally friendly, rail-connected world.
  • Develop your career with a forward-thinking company dedicated to transforming rail technology.
  • Contribute to groundbreaking projects that bridge the past and future of rail transport.
  • Be a key player in creating solutions that promote a more sustainable and efficient rail network.

About You:

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in an engineering discipline or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of systems engineering experience in a safety-critical or highly-regulated industry (e.g., aerospace, defense, medical devices, automotive, rail).
  • Direct experience interacting with a federal regulatory agency (e.g., FRA, FAA, FDA, NHTSA) to achieve product certification, waivers, or approvals.
  • Proven experience developing and validating safety-critical systems (hardware and software) in accordance with industry standards (e.g., DO-178C, ISO 26262, IEC 61508, or similar).
  • Deep understanding of the systems engineering lifecycle, including requirements management, system architecture, and verification/validation.
  • U.S. Person status (this position does not offer immigration sponsorship).

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Direct experience working with the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and knowledge of US railway systems or regulations (e.g., 49 CFR Parts 200-299).
  • Experience in the development and verification of autonomous systems, robotics, or complex control systems.
  • Experience authoring a complete safety case for a novel technology.
  • Familiarity with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools and methodologies.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced startup or Agile development environment.
  • Experience working in Agile environments for hardware and software development.
  • Experience with cyber-security assessments and certifications, particulary for performing work on government projects.

Typical Education and Experience:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education (e.g. Bachelor and/or Master) and typically 3 or more years' related work experience.
