Howmet Engines seeks a Senior Ceramic Engineer! This position will be based out of our Howmet Research Center in Whitehall, Michigan.
Primary Responsibilities
- Act as a primary subject matter technical resource in non-metallic materials used in the production of aerospace and power generation investment cast components, including raw material processing, laboratory testing as well as root cause analysis of process and material challenges
- Provide hands-on support of ceramic core and shell mold manufacturing, raw material quality and material technical support to Howmet production and R&D functions
- Guide and perform investigations of quality, material and process improvement opportunities across multiple sites and processing methods
- Travel to Howmet and supplier facilities is required and is typically less than 20%, but may vary depending on need
Basic Qualifications:
- B.S. in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Ceramic Engineering or related discipline from an ABET accredited institution
- 2 or more years of relevant experience in processing, testing or deployment of ceramics in a manufacturing environment
- Ability to effectively communicate with suppliers, production facilities, R&D teams, and leadership on projects and technical efforts
- Strong reasoning and critical thinking skills to drive root cause and resolution of product and process challenges
- Employee must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position
- This position entails access to export-controlled items and employment offers are conditioned upon an applicant's ability to lawfully obtain access to such items
Preferred Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience in industry in a ceramic related discipline
- Experience in industrial milling, blending, and firing processes
- Familiarity with laboratory testing techniques used in the characterization of the structure and properties of nonmetallic materials including: microscopy, density, particle size, MOR and dilatometry.
- Familiarity with investment casting and related processes is desirable but not required
