About This Role
The Senior Category Manager, Lab Testing Services is responsible for the strategic management of Biogen’s spend across laboratory testing services supporting Research, Development, Manufacturing, and Commercial functions. This role partners closely with cross‑functional stakeholders to understand business priorities, translate requirements into category strategies, and deliver measurable value aligned with both Procurement and enterprise objectives.
The Senior Category Manager serves as a trusted advisor to internal customers and senior leaders by aggregating stakeholder input, leveraging data and market intelligence, and providing fact‑based recommendations. The role also contributes to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance efficiency, innovation, and risk management across the lab testing services landscape. This position reports to the Procurement Director, Scientific Products & Services.
What You’ll Do
Category Strategy & Management
Develop, implement, and continuously evolve category strategies for Lab Testing Services that align with Biogen’s business objectives and procurement priorities, including:
Clinical trials central and specialty labs
Biomarkers testing
Analytical testing of drug product
Patient safety and genetic testing
Collaborate with cross‑functional stakeholders across R&D, Manufacturing, Commercial, Quality, Legal, and Finance to understand demand drivers, align strategies, and drive adoption.
Serve as a subject matter expert and trusted advisor to senior leadership on lab testing services procurement, market dynamics, and supplier capabilities.
Monitor market trends, emerging technologies, supplier landscapes, and regulatory considerations to inform category direction and mitigate risk.
Leverage spend analytics, market research, and cost models to identify high‑value opportunities related to cost optimization and service performance.
Strategic Sourcing & Contracting
Lead end‑to‑end sourcing initiatives, including RFX development, supplier evaluation, negotiations, and award recommendations.
Own and lead all Master Service Agreement negotiations within the Lab Testing Services category.
Partner with category analysts and procurement operations to execute sourcing strategies efficiently and maximize value realization.
Stakeholder Management
Build and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders, managing expectations and resolving issues throughout the procurement lifecycle.
Facilitate clear and consistent communication with stakeholders, ensuring transparency on sourcing activities, supplier performance, and category outcomes.
Continuous Improvement
Identify and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance procurement processes, supplier performance, and business outcomes.
Promote best practices in category management, sourcing, and supplier engagement across the organization.
Who You Are
You are an experienced procurement professional who thrives in a collaborative, matrixed environment and enjoys partnering with diverse stakeholders to deliver strategic and operational results.
Required Experience & Skills
7+ years of relevant procurement or category management experience.
Bachelor’s degree in a related field required. Advanced degree preferred.
Demonstrated expertise in category management, including development and execution of category strategies informed by internal and external market factors.
Proven experience leading complex negotiations and managing commercial and contractual terms.
Strong project management skills, with the ability to plan and prioritize work, manage competing demands, and lead multiple initiatives concurrently.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence peers, stakeholders, and senior leaders.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in the biotech, pharmaceutical, or life sciences industry.
Knowledge of, or prior experience with, laboratory testing services.
Professional certification such as C.P.M. or CPSM is desirable.

Base salary offered is determined through an analytical approach utilizing a combination of factors including, but not limited to, relevant skills & experience, job location, and internal equity.
